The Google Pixel and Pixel XL were the search giant’s first attempt at building a smartphone both in and out. Both the smartphones are immensely popular and especially impressed the shutterbugs. The Pixel rear camera is still the best one in the market because of Google’ image processing.
In recent times, we’ve seen numerous rumours about the 2017 Pixel smartphones, allegedly codenamed as Google ‘walleye’ and ‘taimen.’ A few months ago, Google was said to be working on three Pixel smartphones this year- two built by HTC and one by LG. However, a recent report claimed that the company had cancelled an HTC made smartphone codenamed ‘muskie.’
So, we are left with two smartphones now- walleye and taimen, where the taimen will be the successor to Pixel XL, and the walleye succeeds the smaller Pixel. Courtesy of XDA-Developers, we now have the major specifications of the two smartphones.
The Pixel XL 2 or the Google Taimen will sport a 5.99-inch wide display, which would be a 1440p OLED panel manufactured by LG. Earlier this year, Google has reportedly partnered with LG to produce OLED panels for the 2017 Pixel phones because Google suffered a major setback for not providing enough stock of the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. The primary reason for the insufficient stock is the lack of displays to produce the devices. Google is planning to solve the issue this year.
And yes, the display will be on par with the ones seen on Samsung Galaxy S8 and LG G6, which isn’t a surprise. The phone will make use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, paired with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Unlike the scenario with first generation Pixel phones where Google used an underclocked Snapdragon 821, the 2017 Pixel phones will house the 2.45GHz CPU (the maximum cluster of the Snapdragon 835 SoC).
The design of the smartphone will be the same though, suggests the rumour. The phone will use both glass and metal at the back, but this time around, the fingerprint scanner will not come into the glass body, and only the rear camera will use the glass backing. Also, the report says there will be a single camera in both the 2017 Pixel smartphones.
The Google walleye or the Pixel 2 will feature a smaller 4.97-inch Full HD display and will be powered by the same 2.45GHz Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Furthermore, a source code spotted online recently showed the presence of ‘Nexus Imprint,’ which was eventually the fingerprint sensor project of Google formed with the Nexus 5x and Nexus 6P in 2015. With the Pixel release, the project vanished. In addition, the Pixel 2 will sport the same design language as the first generation Pixel, not the bezel-less design.
As said earlier, one of the HTC Pixel phones is apparently cancelled, and the other one would be built by South Korean smartphone brand LG. So, the Google Walleye could be the one made by LG because of the presence of Nexus Imprint. This also leads us to believe whether Google is planning to bring back the Nexus lineup. But nothing is known for now.
That said, these are the rumoured specifications of the upcoming Google Pixel phones. These are not the complete specifications, but gives us a glimpse at where Google is heading. What do you think of these specifications for 2017 Pixel smartphones? Let us know by commenting below.
