Here’s why Xiaomi might not launch the Redmi Note 2 in India

Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note 2 Prime in China last week. The device proved to be a great success as 800,000 units of the phone got sold out in merely 12 hours, which is a record in itself. However, it seems that Xiaomi wants to keep the device limited to China at the moment and is not planning to bring the Redmi Note 2 to India.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 2As of now, Xiaomi is battling with a lawsuit that was slammed by Ericsson on the grounds of patent infringement. Xiaomi’s both the devices, the Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note Prime are powered by MediaTek’s Helio X10 chipsets, and that is the reason behind Ericsson’s lawsuit. Xiaomi is barred from importing or selling any device that runs MediaTek chipset. Interestingly, the court has allowed Xiaomi to sell products running on Qualcomm chipsets.

Ericsson has accused Xiaomi of not paying any royalty for using its patented wireless technology standards like GSM, Edge and 3G. Under the segment of Free Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) terms, Ericsson is most likely to file its patents. In a conversation with BGR India, Xiaomi’s spokesperson said, “We are continuously evaluating new products that can be launched in India. But, as of now we do not have plans to launch Redmi Note 2 in India.”

Another legit reason behind not launching the device in India is that Xiaomi launched the similar specced Mi4i in India exclusively, and it does not want to compete with its own device.

Xiaomi refused to comment whether the decision of not bringing Redmi Note 2 in India is due to Ericsson’s lawsuit. The case is still under trial, and that is the reason both the companies are not speaking out much about the feud. For all those who were looking forward to buying the Redmi Note 2, you might have to wait for a long period. There is still a bit confusion whether Xiaomi will bring the Redmi Note 2 Prime to India, as the spokesperson just mentioned Redmi Note 2 in his statement. We hope that Xiaomi comes out with a clarification soon.
