Corning is developing a tougher Gorilla Glass to compete with Sapphire Glass

Since Gorilla Glass' introduction by Steve Jobs during the unveiling of the Apple iPhone 4, we've associated Gorilla Glass with strong screen protection. Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, went on to release its successors, the Gorilla Glass 2, the Gorilla Glass 3, and the Gorilla Glass 4. However, it is now facing some serious threat from Sapphire Glass, which is said to be much better at scratch resistance than Gorilla Glass 4. Now, Corning has announced to its investors that it is developing a new tougher Gorilla Glass, which can compete with Sapphire Glass in terms of scratch-resistance.

Corning Gorilla Glass

Corning has always maintained that Sapphire Glass is much better at resisting scratches, however it isn't nearly as good at holding drops when compared to Gorilla Glass. The company has announced that it is working on Project Phire, a new product that combines the damage-resistance of Gorilla Glass 4 with "scratch resistance that approaches sapphire."

It was being rumoured that Apple Watch will be equipped with Sapphire Glass, but GT Advanced, the Sapphire Display provider with which Apple partnered, abruptly filed for bankruptcy. So, it is possible that Apple might be looking forward to Corning's upcoming product so that they could use it in their upcoming smartwatch as well as the successor to the iPhone 6.
