LG will launch its next flagship handset, the LG G3, sometime this quarter. The South Korean manufacturer divulged its first quarter financial earnings today, in which LG announced a growth of 19 percent in the smartphone category. The manufacturer sold 12.3 million handsets in total, of which 5 million were LTE-enabled devices.

LG G3 Q2 launch

LG mentioned in its press release that it was looking to a strong second quarter as well, thanks to the sales of devices like the LG G3. The G3 has long been rumored to launch in the first quarter, but that did not materialize. A reason for the delay in the launch of the handset might have to do with its hardware. The G3 is said to come with a 5.5-inch 2K screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, which might be hard to mass produce. An internal Samsung document unearthed last week of Project KQ, which is meant to be the 2K version of the Galaxy S5, cited the lack of availability of 2K screens as the main reason for not launching a Galaxy S5 with a 2K display.

In addition to a 2K screen, the G3 is also said to feature a Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974AA) SoC with four cores clocked at 2.26 GHz, an Adreno 330 GPU, 3 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory, 16 MP camera sensor with OIS, power and volume buttons at the back of the device and a new user interface.

While the above hardware details are likely for the LTE version of the device, it is likely that LG will launch another version of the handset with its custom SoC. LG is believed to be designing a custom SoC in-house that is called Odin, much like what Samsung does with the Exynos line. There have been conflicting rumors thus far as to whether the G3 will be the first device to feature this custom SoC. Even if the device does not feature LG’s Odin processor, from the hardware details, it is clear that this device will give other flagship devices a run for their money.
