Aqua Comms Activates New Fiber Pair on the AEC-1 Subsea Network
Global subsea connectivity service provider Aqua Comms has announced the activation of a new fiber pair on its AEC-1 system, which connects New York, Dublin, and London. With this, the company has accelerated its investment in the AEC-1 platform. The new fiber pair has been brought into service to address the growing bandwidth demands of Aqua Comms’ customers, the company said on Tuesday.

Energy Savings and Reduced Power Consumption

“From a sustainability perspective, this new fiber pair has given us the opportunity to thoroughly analyse the entire system and supplier network to achieve significant energy savings," said Nick Barton, Chief Commercial Officer of Aqua Comms.

"Through the use of new technology, we will be able to generate more capacity per fiber pair, leading to better performance in power consumption per Tb and therefore a significantly more sustainable system. The system will also reduce regen requirements at our various cable landing stations and simplify backhauls to create a greener path," Barton added.

Advanced Technology

The AEC-1 system currently uses Ciena's GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution and is set to integrate Ciena's 1.6 Tbps coherent optical solution in the coming months, which is projected to reduce energy consumption per bit by over 50 percent compared to the first fiber pair.
