Uninor the joint venture of Unitech and Norway telecom major Telenor whose mobile service licenses has been canceled by the Supreme Court under 2G verdict, has started its 'Operation Shut Down' in four telecom circles - Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Orissa.
Our exclusive sources confirms that Uninor will soon ask its users in these circles to port out their mobile number to another operator using Mobile Number Portability (MNP) prior to the scheduled suspension of Uninor Mobile services on 31st August, 2012.
Uninor has also discontinued some of its popular STVs and Special offers in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Orissa.
Earlier Uninor said that it will scale down GSM operations in four circles out of the total 13 telecom circles where it is commercially active to focus resources on the remaining areas like Mumbai, Maharashtra & Goa and seven other best performing circles such as UP East, UP West, Bihar and Jharkhand, Kolkata, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
Uninor have time till September 7 to offer their mobile services in all 13 telecom circles after which they will be forced to close down or shut down their operations in case if they fail to get a new 2G licence and spectrum in fourthcoming auction of spectrum by DoT.
The Supreem Court in February cancelled 122 licences (inclusing all / Pan India licence of Uninor) issued by the Telecom Minister A Raja in 2008 and asked the Government to conduct fresh auctions by August 31.
