Samsung revamped its mid-range Galaxy A series last month with the launch of Galaxy A8 (2018), Galaxy A8+ (2018). Now it looks like the company has shifted the focus to the cheaper mid-range Galaxy J series. An unannounced phone with model number Samsung SM-J720F was spotted in Geekbench and GFXBench listings. Notably, the original Galaxy J7 variants of the device in 2016 and 2017 have model numbers SM-710F and SM-730F. The reports, however, suggest the next-gen Galaxy J device will be dubbed “Galaxy J8 (2018)” in order to keep its name in sync with upper mid-range Galaxy A series.

Besides the model number, the benchmark listing also sheds light on the key specifications of the smartphone. Among the most interesting specs, the alleged Galaxy J8 is supposed to offer is the Android Oreo 8.0 out-of-the-box. This is a feature that not even the new Galaxy A8, A8+ have.

The spec list in benchmark listing also hints that the Galaxy J8 (2018) will employ the new Exynos 7885 SoC that comes with octa-core CPU clocked at 1.6GHz and Mali G-71 GPU. It is the same chipset that the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ are equipped with. The RAM is 4GB, and internal storage is 32GB.

Samsung might bestow a regular 5.5-inch screen with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution as per the listing. Since the Galaxy J7 Pro sports an FHD 1080p display, it is questionable why Samsung would want to downgrade the display resolution of its upcoming smartphone. Possibly, it could be some mistake since it doesn’t go well with rest of the phone specs.

In the camera department, the Galaxy J8 is said to pack 12MP primary sensor on the back and a secondary 8MP selfie shooter. There’s a possibility the 8MP frontal setup is going to be a dual camera setup at the front. Both cameras will though come with FHD 1080p video recording capabilities.

The device will run the latest Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. It is yet unclear when the Galaxy J series smartphone will be unveiled, but most reports say it will be probably launched before the MWC 2018. Samsung seeks to highlight its flagship Galaxy S9 at the Mobile World Congress.
