The classic Flip Phones are making an appearance again, thanks to South Korean tech giant Samsung. There were reports earlier that Samsung is allegedly working on its next flip phone after the company launched the Samsung W2017 flip phone in November last year in China.
The new clamshell phone, dubbed as the Samsung W2018, was spotted on the TENAA benchmark site a few weeks ago. As per the listing, the handset was to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset shipped with 4GB of RAM. However, a new leak by a trusted Chinese source suggests that the Samsung W2018 might come with a few different specifications.
According to the tipster, the Samsung W2018, with the model number SM-W2018, will feature a Snapdragon 835 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, under the hood. Based on this information, we can deduce that the handset will be powered by an octa-core processor along with Adreno 540. The Snapdragon 835 is a high-end processor seen in Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8+, and expected in the Galaxy Note 8 as well.
Going by the earlier TENAA listing, the Samsung W2018 sports a 4.2-inch display with HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution and internally armed with a quad-core Snapdragon 821 chipset. The processor is coupled with Adreno 530 GPU and packs in 4GB of RAM alongside. The smartphone is rumoured to run on Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 with TouchWiz UI on top and is backed up by a 2,300mAh battery.
The Samsung W2018 is expected to come with 64GB of internal storage with an added option of further storage expansion up to 256GB via a dedicated microSD card slot. In the camera department, the Samsung W2018 houses a 12MP auto-focus rear camera with a LED flash on the rear of the device and a 5MP front-facing camera with fixed focus on the front.
The handset will most likely offer connectivity options like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, 4G VoLTE support, and a micro-USB port for external file sharing and charging. According to the TENAA listing, the Samsung W2018 will come in Black colour and has the dimensions 122 x 60.2 x15.5 mm while weighing in at 155 grams.
In another tip from the same source, the leakster claimed that the Samsung would release another flagship that will not be a part of the Galaxy brand. This comes as a surprise since almost all Samsung phones are named under the Galaxy brand by the company. The South Korean smartphone maker seems to be working on yet another clamshell device with the model number SM-G9298, which could be different from the Samsung W2018 clamshell phone.
