Pan India 4G – LTE service license holder Reliance JIO Infocomm (RJIL), Idea Cellular and Uninor (TeleWings) today submitted their applications for taking part in the 900mhz and 1800mhz GSM spectrum auction scheduled for February 3, 2014.

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Reliance Communications (Rcom), Aircel and Tata Teleservices (Tata Docomo) already applies for the same as earlier we shared on TelecomTalk.

The Auction of Spectrum will be a big bang now for all leading GSM players like Vodafone, Airtel, because Reliance Jio  has applies for both band – premium 900 and 1800mhz GSM spectrum. Vodafone India’s three circles licence (Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata) Bharti Airtel’s in Delhi and Kolkata, and Loop Mobile’s licence in Mumbai are due to expire this November 2014.

Reliance Jio has pan-India 4G spectrum and licenses and all set to launch its nationwide 4G services soon.

Our sources confirms that GSM operator Videocon and Loop Mobile or Loop Telecom and Pure CDMA player MTS India would  stay away from the race or decides not to participate in auction of spectrum scheduled for February 3, 2014.

The GSM 1800 Mhz band is being put up for auction as per the Supreme Court order that the Government sell all spectrum that was freed from the cancellation of 122 licences on February 2, 2012 in the 2G spectrum scam.

While the premium GSM 900 Mhz is being auctioned in the in three metros – Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata – as the current lincences of mobile operators – GSM biggies namely Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Loop Mobile (Mumbai) will expire in November, 2014.

State-owned telecom operators BSNL and MTNL have also not applied for the bidding, as Govt Operators are not allowed to bid for auction of spectrum.

Today i.e. 15th January is the last date for submitting the applications for Spectrum and telecom companies/ mobile operators have the option to withdraw them by January 27, 2014.

Looks like Reliance Jio OFC cable laying in Kerala hit a halt. Kerala Gov canceled permission saying corruption.

    • Rushabh M January 17, 2014 7:47 pm

Yaa even in maharashtra same.thing i asked 1 person who was laying He said the same thing..According to him Solapur,Karad,Satara,Kolhapur,Nagpur,Ahmednagar,Pune,Nashik,Sangli and some cities of maharashtra were in the OFC laying project but as some case.is going on against them…Govt closed the laying….

  • Tharun George January 17, 2014 8:20 am

I think Reliance Jio need more and more spectrum for IPTV service. Using single band for both 4G and IPTV may not be enough.

    • Esmail January 18, 2014 2:41 pm

The wise option would be to buy Reliance Digital TV DTH from ADAG group ans using satellite telecast for providing Live content and activating the Ethernet port on the set top box to connect it to the CPE to provide catch up tv, it will save maximum bandwidth.

      • Maaz Kalim January 19, 2014 5:46 pm

Couldn’t agree with you more! But I don’t think they will due to legal hurdles!! :/

  • Akhil Mohan January 16, 2014 7:40 pm

If Relaince Jio wins pan India license on 900 MHz, can they use it for 4G. I mean is 4G possible on 900 MHz. Will it be any different from 2300Mhz on speed?

    • Ashwani Sharma January 17, 2014 1:05 am

no they cant…. BW will not be sufficient for 4g operation

      • Rama January 17, 2014 1:47 am

BW is not an issue for 4G operation. Infact that is the speciality of LTE technology that it can work with variable BW resources.

    • Saurabh January 17, 2014 12:25 pm

      @Akhil Mohan,

Currently 900 MHz auction is for three metros only not Pan-India. These are Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. In rest circle license is valid till either 2017/2019 and in some 2021. So that will be put on auction once their time comes. ;)

  • Sahil January 16, 2014 7:39 pm

Rjio will win 5-6 mhz in 900 and at least 5 and up to 10 mhz in 1800 in all circles. Rjio is aiming to corner 1800 mhz spectrum pan india. Rjio will single handedly crush Avoid cartel, especially Vodafone.

  • Sahil January 16, 2014 7:32 pm

Rio will hurt Vodafone the most and end its monopoly, especially in Mumbai. Vodafone’s arrogance and monopoly will be crushed by Rjio.

  • Esmail January 16, 2014 2:47 pm

I hope Jio bids and wins PAN India spectrum in 1800MHz band it can keep 2300MHz for home broadband and iPTV deployment and use 1800MHz for voice and FD-LTE on mobile platform.

There seems to be a very bad news for loop mobile customers as the company may shut down its operations in mumbai circle or merge with airtel or vodafone. Also, reliance may rid itself of its cdma business selling it to any foreign carrier. I am hoping that verizon finds some interest in this deal. We need some serious cdma operators not the jokers like reliance who ruined their once powerful cdma business in favour of their crap gsm network. God give them some brains.

    • arka January 16, 2014 8:30 pm

      totally agree with u..

  • Prakash January 16, 2014 1:07 pm

Kay fir se uninor west bengal main aayega?

  • Idea88 January 16, 2014 12:42 pm

Whre the loop mobile?? License got ng to expire in nov 2014. Seems to leave market. Or airtel takeover it.. Fingers crossed ..dont know
@tarun what ur views on loop mobile ??

  • ROHAN SINGH January 16, 2014 11:46 am

Why Uninor is Still Uninor it should be now Telenor. They should expand to other circles to and should provide 3G.

    • Maaz Kalim January 19, 2014 5:41 pm

Exactly, I’m also thinking the same since weeks! I think it’s due to the business performance of Uninor (see the Telenor Group’s website to believe it yourself) as they wouldn’t want to join their brand name with a company which has so many bad till present. I also think that’s the reason Telenor didn’t acquired 100% stake in Uninor despite of FDI allowance. :/

  • nimmi January 16, 2014 6:07 am

i want airtel to take over idea cellular atleast in kerala were i live…… so i can enjoy super umberlla network of 2g and 3g of idea cellular with airtel brand in kerala. iam a loyal user of airtel. i cant live with out airtel. oohh my network…. i love u…

    • Tarun January 16, 2014 6:44 am

Since when you using Airtel in Kerala , as far as i have seen Airtel has poor network coverage compared to Idea in Kerala .. !

    • Tharun George January 16, 2014 7:57 am

Idea has done a very good job in Kerala. Largest 3G and 2G network in Kerala.

I don’t think Airtel will ever buy Idea. 1. Airtel don’t have money 2. Idea wont’ sell.

  • Idea88 January 15, 2014 10:51 pm

@ amey i too reced same. They gave in bill they have pending case in court fr renewal.. I think airtel will acquire it. So triff will hit. I am on currently rs.49 packk..

  • sheldon January 15, 2014 10:26 pm

i feel reliance jio should opt for 1800Mhz, coz their 4g airwave is in 2300Mhz band.

even by taking 900Mhz they have to deploy additional towers for 4g, thus they can combine their BTS of 2g and 4g by opting for 1800Mhz

    • Shiv January 15, 2014 11:41 pm

WoW! This is gonna be THE contest in indian telecom industry post reliance’s Monsoon Hungama….Expect Airtel and JIO to bid for everthing to get the elusive 900 mhg in Mumbai and Delhi circles atleast. And if Vodafone loses Mumbai 900 spectrum, it is going to dent their revenues big time.

Exciting times ahead in Telecom Industry. Surely gonna be a roller coster ride.

  • Kaushik Roy January 15, 2014 10:09 pm

Call rates will rise again and operators already started the process by reducing the validity of Special Tariff Vouchers
Vodafone has to shell out maximum for 3 metro circles of 900 Mhz and they may start the hiking

  • rahul January 15, 2014 10:03 pm

reliance jio laying ofc cable in front of my house in tollygunge karunamoyee-muchipara, kolkata…

  • Pratik January 15, 2014 10:02 pm

@ sanjay bafna will uninor bid for new circles?

  • Tharun George January 15, 2014 9:41 pm

Reliance Jio is going wipe out PAN India spectrum on 1800Mhz and 900Mhz in 3 metros. They could use it for 2G or 4G LTE.

    • Esmail January 15, 2014 10:04 pm

Even I’m curious to see which circles and what band is jio planning to bid for, I’m sure most of the action will revolve around Mumbai and Delhi, glad to be living in Mumbai :)
Also curious to see what reliance communications has up it’s sleeves, now that they have declared they will be selling off the CDMA business and concentrate purely on GSM operations.

      • Shiv January 15, 2014 11:37 pm

Have they decided to sell off CDMA business?? it is news to me? source of news? and kindly elaborate

        • Weir January 16, 2014 12:50 am

Yep..He is Right I read on economic times couple of days before

        • Esmail January 16, 2014 9:27 am

Yes times of India and economic times both had an article on this, reliance communications is separating the GSM and CDMA business and shuffling the top order management staff, later it plans to find a buyer for the CDMA business do it can raise money to cover a portion of their debt. They had tried the same strategy with reliance digital TV business last year where they had tried to sell it to sun direct, but for unknown reasons that deal got canceled. They had plans of selling globacom too :) right now their entire focus is on GSM operations and they soon at taking reliance GSM to number 2 position just behind bharti, higher than Vodafone and idea.

          • Raghu January 17, 2014 1:57 am

I feel Reliance GSM cmg to No 2 Position is long way to go as they have lot of problem in the network, lot of fluctuations, lot of disconnections and Rel CDMA signals , network, call clarity are much better compared to REL GSM. what do u think

            • Anant Jha January 30, 2014 12:09 am

Reliance CDMA is a far much better service than the GSM from Reliance. Lets see what happens….

      • Abhi January 16, 2014 9:29 am

Any idea who will buy the CDMA unit of reliance?

        • Esmail January 16, 2014 11:19 am

Currently MTS is the only operator who is looking focused towards expanding CDMA operations in the country, even TATA is not keen on continuing CDMA business as it did not bid for spectrum in 3 circles where it does not possess spectrum and also returned the surplus spectrum in 800MHz band to the government, so it could be MTS unless some foreign operator like Verizon steps in.

    • manu January 16, 2014 10:59 am

pardon my ignorance but does this mean that kerala will have a new 2g service provider in the form of reliance jio

      • Citizen January 16, 2014 12:13 pm

        Yes. :)

  • Jot January 15, 2014 9:18 pm

    Is this a 4G auction ?
    Please confirm.

    • SS January 15, 2014 9:34 pm

Spectrum issued from now onwards is technologically neutral.

  • Amey January 15, 2014 8:57 pm

Why Loop mobile is not participating in auction do they want to close their operations like uninor in Mumbai.? Anyone knows the decision about the decision regarding renew of spectrum which results were out in second week of January as I have received letter from Loopmobile with my December bill.

  • Weir January 15, 2014 8:21 pm

If Reliance JIO Win 900 MHz..Then they can give 4G services on FDD LTE?

  • Esmail January 15, 2014 8:21 pm

8 operators submitting applications is a sign off aggressive bidding, hoping to see healthy competition return to the telecom market :) hoping it puts an end to cartelization.
