MediaTek has just launched the Dimensity 8400 SoC. This is a chip targetted for mid-range or semi-premium phones. The Dimensity 8400 has come with signficant upgrades over its predecessor. This time, there are no little-cores. This octa-core chip has eight Cortex-A725 cores clocked at up to 3.25 GHz. MediaTek is calling this 'All Big Core' design. The CPU is paired with a powerful NPU to accelerate Gen-AI tasks. There's also MediaTek’s new Dimensity Agentic AI Engine (DAE) that turns traditional AI applications into sophisticated agentic AI applications.

This chip is 41% faster than the previous gen chip, Dimensity 8300. At the same time, efficiency has been looked after as the Dimensity 8400 offers a 44% reduction in peak power use compared to its predecessor. For gaming, there's Arm Mali G720 GPU that offers 24% higher peak performance and 42% greater power efficiency than the Dimensity 8300.

The GPU will work in sync with the MediaTek Frame Rate Converter (MFRC) and MediaTek Adaptive Gaming Technology (MAGT) 3.0 for an improved gameplay experience for the users.

"With MediaTek’s NPU 880, the Dimensity 8400 supports mainstream LLM/SLM/LMMs across the globe so users can enjoy the latest Gen-AI applications such as translation, rewriting, contextual replies, AI recording, and media generation," MediaTek said in a release.

For the camera, there's MediaTek Imagiq 1080 ISP which leverages remosaic technology to capture more light, focus faster and more accurately, and produce high-resolution images. The chip also supports HDR recording throughout the entire zoom range so users can take incredible videos. The chip has 5G-A modem which supports up to 3CC-CA and up to 5.17 Gbps performance. Further, it can support WQHD+ display and 144Hz refresh rate with dual-screen support.
