Rakesh Garg removed as Telecom Secretary ten months ahead of his retirement

Rakesh Garg has been removed from the post of Telecom Secretary ten months ahead of his retirement, and has been shifted to minority affairs, as part of a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle, wherein as many as 10 new Secretaries have been appointed in various central government ministries and other organisations.

JS Deepak, a 1982 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the new telecom Secretary. Deepak, an IIM Ahmedabad alumnus, who is currently Secretary, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY), will be replaced by Aruna Sharma, who at present working in her cadre state -- Madhya Pradesh.

Deepak was previously additional secretary in the department of commerce. Prior to that, he served as the joint secretary at the department of telecom.

According to reports, Deepak is credited with successfully conducting the first ever e-auction of spectrum in 2010, which helped the government raise close to Rs 1.067 lakh crore.
