you can’t expect any 1 or 2 operators will be winner in every states. Airtel, Vodafone & Idea are the quality operators & you have to admit this truth. Airtel & Vodafone are among best 3 operators in every circle. How can you say people will prefer ‘X’ to ‘Y’? Do have any authenticated report about this or any result of any survey recently conducted? If you can show it, I’ll have no say. But if you don’t, then don’t comment like this. You don’t prefer Airtel or Vodafone, it’s your own choice but don’t generalise this unless you are sure. I hope you’ll not take this personally as I strongly beleive that we can be good friends.

Now a days Tata Docomo is very hot among youth and they are waiting MNP to switch Tata Docomo. I was also very passionate about Tata Docomo but only till yesterday. I activated GPRS pack for one day @Rs.5 on oct27 morning on my Tata Docomo no. 9044872956 to experience their GPRS but it was a worst experience as they deducted Rs.5 from my main balance but when I browsed to Telecomtalk.info they deducted again from my main balance. While I complained to customer care they didn’t give proper response as their system was not showing all these. I emailed but couldn’t get proper resolution. So guys, trust to your established service provider as they have better solution.

Finally the long wait will come to an end next month. Yes, the Mobile Number Portability would be made available from Nov 1 onwards said Indian Telecom Minister A. Raja reported The Hindu. After the recent announcement of 3G services by the mobile operators, the Mobile Number Portability’s arrival surely promises pleasant days ahead.

    A. Raja, Telecom Minister for India, said, “November 1 onwards MNP would be operational partially… We wanted to inaugurate it in Haryana.”

Mobile Number Portability facility will let mobile phone subscribers to retain their ten digit phone numbers if they wish to go for different or any mobile operator’s service. For instance, if you are Airtel subscriber, then you can retain your number after applying for MNP and change to any other cellular service you want.

Under the MNP process, users will have to apply for number portability and pay nominal fees to retain their ten digit phone number. Licences have been given to Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions, a 74:26 joint venture between U.S.-based Telcordia and Deepak Talwar Consultants, to implement MNP in India.

Mobile Number Portability will be rolled out in phases in different regions. Stay tuned for more updates on the MNP facility rollout and other details.

We’ve noted that few mobile operators have started requesting documents for re-verification and identification. This is applicable to all mobile phone owners who’ve bought GSM or CDMA connection before Jan 1 this year.

MNP to be launched partially on Nov 1: Raja

The telecom minister says the roll out will begin from Haryana

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Amidst the speculation that the mobile number portability (MNP) may miss yet another deadline, Union Telecommunications Minister A. Raja today said that the facility will be partially launched from November.

While speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event organised by BSNL here today, Raja said the MNP will begin partially from November 1 from Haryana.

He also said that in the first phase, MNP will be launched in 11 circles and the implementation will begin from the second or third week of November. An official announcement about this will be made on November 1.

Though the DoT and TRAI had claimed that the much-delayed MNP will not be delayed further, and meet the October 31 deadline, operators were not sure whether the deadline could be met.

MNP will allow users to retain their mobile telephone numbers even if they switch their operators.

It has already been delayed four times. Initially, MNP was to be implemented by December 31, 2009 in all the metros along with the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

The deadline was then changed to March 31, 2010 and then to June 30, 2010. The June 30 deadline was again deferred as operators were not ready with the infrastructure to provide the service.

Number portability put off once again

Mansi Taneja / New Delhi October 24, 2010, 0:14 IST

Communications Minister A Raja’s promise to let people switch their mobile service operators while retaining their telephone number has got delayed once again — the deadline for the implementation of mobile number portability has been postponed from October 31 to December 20.

This is the third postponement in less than a year. Mobile number portability was first expected to kick off on December 31, 2009 in the metros and category-A circles, and on April 1, 2010 in the rest of the country.

The official reasons for the delay sound familiar. One, the service operators are not ready, though several of them are working overtime to launch third-generation services by Diwali. Two, the investment proposal of the overseas partner of one of the two companies mandated to implement portability has not yet been cleared by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

The Department of Telecommunications had given licences to two companies: Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions which is a 74-26 joint venture between US-based Telcordia and Deepak Talwar Consultants. In March 2009, Telcordia had received FIPB’s approval. But the Ministry of Home Affairs subsequently proposed to revoke the approval, citing security concerns as Telcordia had signed a contract with Pakistan MNP Database for implementing mobile number portability there. Further, Deepak Talwar Consultants had no expertise in running a telecommunication network. FIPB had thus revoked its clearance given to the company. But it again applied for permission; FIPB has deferred the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Department of Telecommunications has asked Syniverse Technologies to get ready for mobile number portability across the country.

    Forget MNP…..Now See This…..

    One India…One Nation….

Telecom regulator Trai will examine a recent Department of Telecom (DoT) proposal to merge all 22 telecom circles in the country into a single service area, a move that could lead to the end of costly roaming charges for Indian mobile phone users, an official said on Sunday.

A senior Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) official said the regulator will look into the issue of merging all the telecom circles into one, but did not
give a clear timeline within which TRAI could come out with a consultation paper on the issue.

The government is considering the merger of the 22 telecom circles in the country into either a single service area or four separate zones to enable subscribers to move freely across states without paying extra charges for roaming.

As per the recommendations of a core team of the Telecom Ministry: “There could be either one service area covering the entire country, or there could be four zones each covering a particular region.”

The core team was constituted by the Department of Telecom to give recommendations on strategic issues related to licencing matters. Roaming services allow cellphone users to continuously make and receive calls while travelling outside the geographical constraints of their home network by using a visited network.

Carriers charge a higher rate for roaming. Fees for roaming are not standard and differ from operator to operator. If implemented, the mobile users will not have to shell out extra money when they travel from one state to other. However, the operators will be hit hard if such a step is taken.

Operators had paid a huge premium for bagging 3G airwaves in certain circles, so if all the circles are merged, they stand to lose.

i don’t think mnp is coming by nov 2010. if it really were, why is there information on just one circle. i’m sure india doesn’t comprise only of karnataka and no regulator can implement mnp in one circle only even if its to being with.
also, there is no news or information anywhere else on the entire web. so that means that this information is questionable.
can TT kindly clarify the source of this information without being vague. TT’s credibility is at stake if this news proves to be wrong.

Yes It has been Delayed AGAIN… And may be this will continue for the years to come…..

Moreover, the Licence of the mnp implementor may be cancelled…..

one of my friend’s father who works in top position in the telecom industry told me during a discussion at his home couple of days back that mnp will be introduced only after some incumbent operators have launched their 3G services.

that effectively means another 3-5 months more before mnp comes to light… it will not be before that. so whatever announcements are made will be false starters… just to show that some efforts are being made to launch mnp. the lobbying against mnp done by some incumbents is very strong and powerful.

you know what, BSNL doing right things in view of indian security ,take for example why private operators asking again and again to submit proof, Indian security system not believing private operators, bsnl is true Indian company.

Dear friend, please note that Airtel also doesn’t provide duplicate SIM without verification of your id proof. I just said that Airtel do it easily while others do it after a lot of formalities. I’m fond of Airtel because of their services but will change my Airtel number after MNP implementation because they provide their services at a costlier rate.

Mostly rural areas people use BSNL, Airtel and Vodafone. Now see who don’t care of these people? Answer is surely Vodafone fallowed by BSNL. If your SIM get lost are damaged you have to do a lot of formalities and have to go to the BSNL office or Vodafone mini store which are mostly in city areas and where they don’t behave properly. Rural people don’t want to do all these. On the other hand Airtel has provided these facilities through their distributors. So you don’t need to go city. Not only this if your SIM get lost or stolen you have to file an NCR (Non Cognizable Report), which is often misunderstood as FIR in police station while Airtel provides new SIM without any such formalities submitting your documents only. These are the customer friendly behaviour of Airtel which leads them to others.

you know what, BSNL doing right things in view of indian security ,take for example why private operators asking again and again to submit proof, Indian security system not believing private operators, bsnl is true Indian company.

one can change company after 6 months of last change

The portability is technology agnostic. You can move from GSM -> GSM, GSM -> CDMA, CDMA -> CDMA & CDMA -> GSM. If there were any other technologies being used in the country, you would have been able to move between them and the above too.
And the fee is fixed by TRAI at Rs.19

i don’t think mnp is coming by nov 2010. if it really were, why is there information on just one circle. i’m sure india doesn’t comprise only of karnataka and no regulator can implement mnp in one circle only even if its to being with.

also, there is no news or information anywhere else on the entire web. so that means that this information is questionable.

can TT kindly clarify the source of this information without being vague. TT’s credibility is at stake if this news proves to be wrong.

Manoj, for your information four months back i lost my mobile with Airtel SIM. When I contacted the CC they asked me go to nearest Airtel Relationship Center and get the SIM. To reach airtel relationship center i traveled 10kms. Airtel did not gave me a chance to collect the duplicate SIM from there distributor in my area. I am leaving in a chennai and this is the case in metro. So i feel this will be the same in rural areas aswell. So I feel what your quoting is wrong.

That’s why this news is 100% correct.

Slightly different but related point here

When STD call rates are almost equal to local call rates, why charge on roaming? Roaming was a concept introduced when one operator is not present in all circles. Now all major operators are present in all circles – for voice and other basic services. Then why charge roaming charges?

In my view you can expect major companies to offer free roaming, – to attract customers from other networks, through MNP

I dnt think MNP will come in Karnatka….

    Bcoz….

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked Syniverse Technologies to get ready for implementing mobile number portability (MNP) across the country, as it may have to withdraw the licence of Telcordia Technologies, the other selected company, after the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) rejected its proposal.

And Telecodia is supposed to provide MNP in Karnatka…..

    Moreover,

The telecom department had served MNP Interconnection a show-cause notice, asking it why its licence should not be cancelled, after the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) rejected its proposal citing security concerns. FIPB, the body that clears foreign investment proposals, was acting on a warning by the home ministry that Telcordia Technologies had operations in Pakistan.

i think the biggest looser in india overall will be vodafone followed by airtel and then rcom. every player will loose a part of their customer base but the biggest net looser will be vodafone. and the biggest net gainer will be tata docomo. airtel, rcom and bsnl will net losers overall but only marginally.

ultimately, i think MNP is not about winning and loosing companies. its actually about customers/citizens of india who have genuine problem with their service provider (regarding network coverage, quality of calls, transparent and honest billing, good customer service, providing industry standard products and services etc) and less about tariffs (as is the popular belief and wrong notion).

people who are tariff/money conscious will not be wasting their money with their old service providers and waiting for mnp to arrive (at lest most of them). they would have already dumped them and shifted to a new operator even without mnp.

mnp is about freedom and the power to make choice/not feel like slaves to mobile companies. mnp is azaadi.

for me personally, it will be getting salvation from a nightmare called vodafone.

I am a airtel customer and quite satisfied with coverage and service. once i faced the problem of automatic VAS activation and the credited my account as soon as complained. but all the operators are doing the same except BSNL.here in TN docomo coverage is limited to cities and towns only it is not aviable in villages.

IN SOUTH KARNATAKA. VILLAGE PEOPLE WILL SWITCH FROM AIRTEL TO DOCOMO. BECAUSE OF IT’S XCELLENT COVERAGE IN MOST OF THE VILLAGES AND MOSTLY THE CITY PEOPLE PREFER AIRCEL, UNINOR AND DOCOMO.

Looks like he already did the survey and those who are not willing to shift to aircel Mr. arjun will beat them or may be abuse them.. He is a “dushasan(mahabharat)” kind of guy. Non sense!

biggest losser will be BSNL and Tata Indicom.Tata indicom will surely lose huge customer to Reliance CDMA and MTS.
Both offering 1p\2sec offer in kolkata and more than full talktime offer regularly.

Clear winner in Bangalore will be Airtel as they have much better coverage and consistent data speeds. I will definitely switch over my Docomo [bad with many call drops and very poor data speeds] to Airtel

I think Airtel will not be a looser because of their network coverage and better service. If you want to activate or deactivate any VAS in any other service provider you have to do a lot but if you are an Airtel customer you can do it easily. If your balance has been deducted wrongly you can’t get it back easily in other service provider and in case of Reliance you can’t get it back anyhow, but Airtel returns it easily.

Guys as per my view in karnataka Airtel will emerge as a clear winner after mnp bcos i myself did a small survey among my friends n relatives using idea vodafone bsnl. 99% of ppl said they will switch to airtel as it has good superior network and coverage. Biggest looser will be idea cellular and to some extent vodafone will also loose.
uninor, aircel are so small tat hardly they ll gain or loose something.
And abt docomo, its 50:50 case. few docomo customers want to switch to airtel.

MNP WILL BE HIT IN A REAL SENSE ONLY IN CITIES AND TOWNS WHERE EVERY OPERATOR HAS GOOD NETWORK COVERAGE AND PEOPLE WANT TO BENEFIT FROM LOW TARRIF OF NEW OPERATORS AND WANT TO STICK TO THEIR OWN DEAR NUMBER DOING SO.WHILE IN ANOTHER CASE MNP MAY NOT BE FRUITFUL AS EXPECTED BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE USE DUAL SIM PHONES WHICH HAVE REALLY FACED OFF THE C0MPETITION AND IN RURAL AREAS ALMOST NO ONE HAS IDEA OF WHAT IS MNP AND IN OTHER SCENARIO THEY WILL STICK TO OLD OPERATORS BECAUSE OF THEIR NETWORK COVERAGE,REPUTATION ETC..ETC

Would shift to docomo as they offer better plans along wid missed call alerts.

”INDIA” a great nation, largest democracy in the world experiencing MNP and 3G for the first time and simultaneously. A great leap to Indian Telecom industry’s credit.

From here on it is the common man/Subscriber who will be benefited from this development. For all of us (Indians), it’s no looking back now as we move on into the next level of Technological development with 3G and MNP.

”Confirmation of MNP implementation is like a victory of freedom struggle to each and every Telecom subscriber of this country against the dictatorship of some stubborn operators”.

Isn’t it the true right of Democracy which we have won ?
