Tele2 Latvia Connects Mobile Base Stations in Liepaja to Fiber Network
Tele2 Latvia announced that it has completed a major upgrade to its mobile network in Liepaja, connecting nearly all base stations to the fibre-optic network. This advancement boosts 4G LTE and 5G capacity by approximately ten times, addressing rising customer demand and increasing mobile data consumption, Tele2 Latvia said in an official statement on Monday.

Investment and Project Timeline

The project, completed in less than a year with an investment of over EUR 200,000, aims to enhance network stability and performance, particularly given Liepaja's challenging windy weather conditions.

"Radio frequencies are a limited resource and it is difficult to build wireless transmission lines in a dense urban environment, so connecting base stations to an optical network is a good solution," Tele2 Latvia said.

"In addition, in the case of Liepaja, the windy weather conditions, which tend to affect mobile communications, should also be taken into account. Connecting the base stations to the optical network will allow for more stable and higher capacity communications," added Tele2.

Expansion of 5G Coverage Across Latvia

Tele2 said it is also expanding its 5G coverage across Latvia. This year alone, the company has installed 156 new 5G base stations and modernized an equal number of 4G stations. A total of 24 5G base stations are currently operational in Liepaja and Southern Kurzeme regions.
