Expanding Connectivity in Rural Ethiopia
As part of its commitment to Digital Ethiopia, Ethio Telecom pledged in March 2024 to deliver 500 rural mobile sites by the year’s end, with 100 already completed this year. These new eco-friendly, solar-powered mobile solutions offer 2G and 3G connectivity, with the potential for upgrades to 4G, ensuring sustainable and scalable technology for remote areas, according to the official release.
Impact on Rural Communities
The operator explained that the project faced challenges, including difficult terrain and scattered settlements, but was completed with strong local community support. The new infrastructure is expected to reduce the distance residents previously traveled—by up to 20 kilometres—to access telecom services, while empowering rural communities with digital services in education, health, and finance.
