Deutsche Telekom to Expand Fiber Network to 674,000 Premises in Munich
Deutsche Telekom has announced plans to significantly enhance Munich’s digital infrastructure with a major fiber optic expansion. By the end of 2032, the company aims to connect approximately 674,000 households and businesses in the inner city, in addition to the ongoing expansion in the outskirts. This initiative will bring fiber optics to about one million households in Munich, Telekom said in a statement this week.

Expansion Overview

Work will begin shortly, with 80,000 to 110,000 households in Munich expected to benefit from the expansion of the fiber optic network each year. In total, Telekom plans to supply around one million Munich households with fiber optics (FTTH) up to the apartment.

The new network will deliver faster upload and download speeds, lower latency, and improved stability, supporting multiple digital activities simultaneously. Telekom said its open access model will allow customers to choose from various providers, including Vodafone, 1&1, and Telefonica.

Regional Impact

In addition to Munich, Telekom is advancing fiber optic coverage throughout Bavaria. Since 2018, 1.15 million households have been connected, with an additional 250,000 households reached through funded projects. This year alone, over 300,000 new connections are being added.

The expansion offers several benefits: higher transmission rates compared to copper lines, increased reliability, reduced energy consumption, and enhanced property value. Fiber is considered the best infrastructure for the coming decades, the company said.
