Airtel Uganda Rolls Out 5G Network

Airtel Uganda launches its 5G network at Bulange, Mengo, providing customers with limitless possibilities and enhanced connectivity. The company plans to expand 5G coverage nationwide.

Airtel Uganda Rolls Out 5G Network

Airtel Uganda announced the activation of 5G services at Bulange, Mengo, on Sunday (July 30th, 2023). The company stated that Airtel and K2 customers would now be able to enjoy the limitless possibilities that 5G brings. Airtel Uganda also confirmed conducting tests on 11 4G sites in Kampala in February 2023. Subsequently, it applied for the required spectrum from the Uganda Communications Commission to deploy a nationwide 5G network.

Bulange, Mengo: The 5G Ready Zone

In a LinkedIn post, Airtel Uganda shared, "Bulange and surrounding areas now become a 5G zone in a plan that shall see the revolutionary technology rolled out to the whole country in a phased manner."

As reported by TelecomTalk, Airtel Uganda recently secured the spectrum for 5G deployment and now activated its first site at Bulange in Mengo.

Airtel Uganda emphasized that the Central Business District, hosting Mengo, experiences high socio-economic activity, necessitating improved connectivity. The 5G network will connect families, friends, and businesses with faster data speeds, catering to various needs, such as remote team collaboration, online education, live farming tips, video engineering tasks, gaming, and entertainment experiences.

Airtel Uganda's 5G Network

According to Airtel, the 5G network can handle up to one million connected devices per square kilometre, while 4G can only support up to 100,000 devices in the same area.

To access 5G, customers with 5G phones should select the 5G network option on their devices. Existing Airtel 4G SIM or E-SIMs will work on 5G without the need for an upgrade.

As previously reported by TelecomTalk, Airtel Uganda was 5G Ready, as announced on February 21st. Last week, Airtel unveiled its plan to gradually launch 5G on a site-by-site basis, initially covering 50 sites in Kampala's central business district.
