Reliance Jio likely to launch fiber-based free DTH service on December 15: Reports

The 4G entrant Reliance Jio Infocomm may launch its optical fiber-backed direct-to-home TV services in India on December 15, 2016. In a bid to disrupt the DTH space, the telco may offer the service free of cost to ots subscribers for the first six months, Gizbot reported.

The report further said that the company's TV plans are expected to start from as low as Rs 185 per month.

If another report by the India Express is to believed, Jio's upcoming DTH service will come bundled with high-speed internet along with a slew of Jio digital services.

Reliance Jio, which lauched commercial telecommunications services in India on September 5, is currently offering free voice and capped data services to its customers till December 31, 2016, under a plan named, "Welcome Offer."

The Indian Express also reported that Jio will offer a device which will work as a set-top-box, as well as an Android smartbox or Apple TV that will help customers control the content and also play games.

The company's DTH services may be called JioTV, which will offer more than 360 channels, at least 50 of which will be in HD, the publication said, adding the service will also come with the seven-day catch up option.

Reliance Jio is currently piloting its high-speed fiber services in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

Jio's plan is to progressively extend this network to to top 100 cities in India.

The Mukesh Ambani-led 4G telco will also extend this optical fiber network to enterprise locations and will provide multi-gigabit per second enterprise-grade wireline data connections to enterprises in these cities.

The Gizbot report said the telco is expected to launch various combo-packs in India to cater to customer needs.
