Samsung has been battling the onslaught of OEMs of the far East for quite a while in India, and is now making an attempt to get back into the game. It has now launched a budget 4G LTE smartphone named the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime 4G. The smartphone was due for a release back in March in India but got delayed due to some unknown reasons.

A Mumbai based retailer, Mahesh Telecom, has revealed that Samsung has quietly launched the smartphone through brick-and-mortar stores in India. Airtel's top guns told us last month, when it launched 4G in Mumbai, that the future will see Airtel tying up with Samsung for promoting 4G. As a result, this one comes with free 3GB of 4G data from the telecom operator. Other freebies include free premium subscriptions  for Hungama and Vuclip services for three months.

It shares all its specifications with the regular Galaxy Core Prime and adds 4G LTE connectivity on top of things. It features a 4.5-inch PLS LCD WVGA display, Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, a 1.2GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC8830 processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, microSD card slot, 5-megapixel primary camera with autofocus and LED flash, a 2-megapixel secondary camera, and a 2,000 mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy Core 4G specifications

  • 4.5-inch PLS LCD display, WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution, 233 ppi, and capacitive multitouch screen
  • Android 4.4 KitKat operating system with TouchWiz UX
  • Spreadtrum SC8830 SoC, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM
  • 8GB ROM and a microSD card slot
  • 5MP primary camera, autofocus, LED flash, and 2MP secondary camera
  • 4G, HSPA+, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, A-GPS, and microUSB v2.0 port
  • 2,000 mAh removable battery

The device is meant to take on the brigade of budget 4G smartphones already on sale in the country, but we don't think that people will be interested in buying the device. It comes with quite low specifications for its price, and there are much better options out there such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G, Yu Yureka, Yu Yuphoria, Lenovo A6000, Lenovo A6000 Plus, and Lenovo A7000 that offer better specifications at the same or even lower price than the Galaxy Core Prime 4G. If such dismal performance continues, Samsung will lose whatever marketshare it currently has in the low-end segment.
