Xiaomi has revealed that in the year 2014, it has applied for 2,318 patents, out of which 665 are outside of China. It's not clear on the number of patents the company has received out of the 2,318 patents it applied. The patents mean nothing if Xiaomi has most of them pending, and it's unclear the nature of patents that the Chinese brand has applied.
The company's CEO, Lei Jun, during a new phone launch event, said, "A lot of people think that Xiaomi doesn't respect technological innovation, and that Xiaomi has no patents. I think everyone misunderstands." He further added "When 10 years have passed, I believe Xiaomi will have tens of thousands of patents."
Earlier this month, Xiaomi was banned by Delhi High Court from importing and selling its smartphones in India after Ericsson alleged that the devices infringe upon its essential patents. After the ban was initiated, Justice G P Mittal ordered the custom authorities to prevent the import of Xiaomi phones which infringe upon AMR, EDGE, and 3G related patents developed by Ericsson. Ericsson had stated that it was forced to take legal action after the Chinese company failed to reach licensing agreement.
Recently, the company had also shown interest to setup business in the country.
