Telekom Deutschland Connects 83 Percent of 5G Sites via Fiber Optics
German Telecommunications service provider Telekom Deutschland has announced that it is enhancing the 5G experience of its users through advanced technology. Telekom stated that with 83 percent of all 5G sites nationwide now linked via fibre optics, the company is delivering lightning-fast 5G services. According to the company, this high-speed connection is crucial to handling the growing mobile data traffic efficiently and reliably.

Fiber-Optic Boost for Enhanced 5G

The company said it has invested significantly in upgrading its network infrastructure. Over 10,000 5G sites now have fibre-optic connections with speeds of 10 Gbps, accounting for nearly 40 percent of all Telekom's 5G sites. This higher data throughput enables improved capacity and peak data rates for customers in specific mobile cells, particularly in high-traffic areas.

10 Gbps Connections

By 2026, Telekom said it plans to equip over 28,000 mobile network locations with 10 Gbps high-speed connections. Telekom Deutschland emphasized that the surge in mobile data traffic, growing at around 30 percent annually, demands such advanced network expansion to meet user expectations.

"Not only the amount of data is increasing rapidly, but also the speed thanks to 5G. That's why we are not only expanding our network with more and more 5G antennas but also ensuring even more capacity and speed in the transport network," said Telekom Deutschland.

Fiber Optic Backbone

Telekom states that the backbone of the 10 Gbps connection is the use of fibre optic connection for the transport network for mobile communications. This ensures the fastest, most sustainable data transmission. Fibre optic lines link radio sites with the central nodes in Telekom's mobile communications transport network, comprising 900 central exchanges across Germany.

Radio Gateways

Telekom further added that the deployment of state-of-the-art mobile radio gateways further facilitates 10 Gbps data rates. These gateways enable faster data processing during the transition between the transport network and mobile radio antennas.

Telekom said it had introduced these in the exchanges starting from 2018 and completed the changeover in 2022. This upgrade was made possible by a new aggregation platform that efficiently transports data from over 36,000 German mobile network sites through 24 higher-level nodes.

Further, the mobile network sites with a 10 Gbps connection are also connected via separate fibre lines to two different central transport network nodes. This makes the sites particularly fail-safe.

3.6 GHz Frequency for 5G

Telekom's 5G antennas operating on the 3.6 GHz frequency mostly benefit from the 10 Gbps fibre optic connection. This enables users to enjoy speeds of up to 1 Gbps for seamless surfing, streaming, and downloads on the move. More than 750 towns and cities across Germany already experience the power of the fastest 5G.

Telekom noted that the 3.6 GHz frequency band complements the 5G frequencies in the 700 MHz and 2.1 GHz frequencies already used throughout Germany in its network.

According to Telekom, currently, over 80 million people in Germany can access Telekom's 5G network, which exceeds 95 percent of the population. Also, more than 80,000 mobile antennas are now transmitting 5G in Telekom's network. The expansion continues, with a target to cover 99 percent of the German population by 2025.
