Xiaomi will release the budget-centric Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5A smartphones by the end of this month or earlier September in China. The Redmi Note 5 will succeed the Redmi Note 4 smartphone, which is the best selling smartphone in India in Q2 2017. Last month, specifications of the Redmi Note 5 had leaked online, which are in-line with today's leaked specifications on Weibo.
Let's start with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 first. The Redmi Note 5 will feature the same 5.5-inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. Xiaomi has been using the same Full HD panel since the Redmi Note 3, but the Chinese company increased the brightness levels in the phone.
The Redmi Note 5 could make use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset, which is an energy efficient octa-core chip. Xiaomi is looking to ditch the 2GB RAM variant of the Redmi Note 5 because the leak suggests the phone to come in just 3GB and 4GB RAM versions with 32GB & 64GB internal storage. There will be a microSD card for storage expansion.
Previous rumours suggested that the phone will have a dual camera setup at the back, but this leak says that the company will have a 16MP primary camera, along with a 13MP front-facing shooter. Yes, finally Xiaomi is foraying into the selfie camera segment. The device will run Android 7.1 Nougat based MIUI 9 and could be backed by a smaller 3790mAh battery. The reason for the reduction of battery capacity in the Redmi Note 5 is unknown at the moment.
Coming to the Redmi Note 5A, it is said to feature the same 5.5-inch Full HD display, and will come in three variants with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage, 4GB RAM+32GB storage, and 4GB RAM+64GB storage. The device is internally said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset.
In terms of the camera, the Redmi Note 5A will have a 12MP Omnivision OV12A10 sensor and 13 MP OV12880 sensor. Sadly, the Note 5A will have a dual camera setup, and not the regular Redmi Note 5. Unfortunately, the Note 5A will come with a smaller 5MP selfie camera with Samsung S5K5E8 sensor. This device will also be backed by the same 3790mAh battery and comes laden with Android 7.1 Nougat based MIUI 9.
The release date for the devices is unknown at the moment, but what makes us believe this leak is they are in-line with the earlier leaked specs of both the phones. That said, if Xiaomi includes these specifications for the Redmi Note 5 and Note 5A, then they will become major contenders in the budget category. The Redmi Note 5 will launch in India in early 2018, following Xiaomi's tradition.
