OPPO has launched the Reno 12 5G series in India. It comprises a regular Reno 12 and a Reno 12 Pro. The highlight of the launch event was the announcement of OPPO AI powering the device. The decision to go with the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 seems like an interesting choice from OPPO. Truth be told, I don't know whether I would recommend this device for its power capabilities. This is because there's a CMF Phone 1 that is offering the same chip at less than Rs 20,000, and then there's the Reno 12 series, priced double, yet offering the same chip.

The likely reason why OPPO went with this chip was to reduce costs, but also get a decent NPU (neural processing unit) integrated chip to power AI features. The AI features on this device are truly promising, and we should check them out without wasting any time.

OPPO Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro Features and Specifications

The OPPO Reno 12 and Reno 12 Pro are almost identical in specifications and design. The only major difference is in the camera, and then there's a Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the Reno 12 Pro while the Reno 12 features Corning Gorilla Glass 7i. With both devices, you get the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 SoC, a 6.7-inch FHD+ display with 1200nits peak brightness, and a 5000mAh battery with SuperVOOC charging with 80W support.

Both devices will get 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security updates.

In the camera department, the OPPO Reno 12 features a triple camera setup with a 50MP Sony LYT600 with OIS, an 8MP IMX355 ultra-wide angle sensor, and a 2MP OV02B10 macro camera along with a 32MP selfie sensor.

The AI features with both these devices are the following - AI Eraser 2.0, AI Best Face, AI Clear Face, AI Studio, AI Smart Image Matting 2.0, AI Writer, AI Summary, AI Speak, AI Recording Summary, BeaconLink, AI LinkBoost, and AI Clear Voice.

Is OPPO Reno 12 Series Good?

The thing is, OPPO has tried its best to deliver a balanced experience with this phone. Don't go for this device thinking it is going to be the most powerful experience you will have. It is yet to be seen whether it will have heating issues or not because of the chip. The AI features should work decently because of the effecient NPU on the Dimensity 7300 SoC.

The camera is what truly differentiates the two devices. Otherwise, they are basically the same. You should wait a little before purchasing this device as the Nord 4 is coming out soon too.
