MTNL launches new 50Mbps Fibre Broadband Plan in Delhi

MTNL Delhi has now launched some new FTTH plans for broadband users in the circle. These plans will offer browsing and downloading speeds of upto 50 Mbps .

Under the new FTTH (Fibre To The Home) Broadband, MTNL has launched five plans – Rs. 799, Rs. 999, Rs. 1500, Rs. 2500, Rs. 3500 – to counter other broadband players in the region. A recent subscription data from the sector regulatory, TRAI, showed that MTNL is constantly losing out broadband subscribers in the region.

However, these plans are FUP based and don’t offer unlimited data. If a user reaches the FUP data limits, he would get slow speeds (upto 2 Mbps) for browsing & downloading content.

It is a welcome move by MTNL, however, the number of potential beneficiaries is limited due to the policy of FTTH rollout followed by MTNL (as well as BSNL). Since laying FTTH is an expensive proposition (specially for a loss making corporation), MTNL prefers providing FTTH only to multi-storied apartment complexes rather than low density (DDAesque flats) or standalone houses. Thereby they have ensured that even though in many areas of Delhi they have a monopoly, due to non-availability of competitors such as Airtel Broadband, they still prefer providing only DSL and at most VDSL broadband connections to these areas.… Read more »

    Seem like excellent plans.

Btw anyone with idea on list of buildings, areas etc with their fibre? I tried looking at but unable to find data. Most of links on FTTH go towards FTTH connection booking or complaint.

Also, do they use GPON or active ethernet?

Yes, i live in south delhi, MTNL has a lot of fibre optic installed under the ground, and they have recently started increasing its availability. Im in touch with MTNL officials and shall try to procure the cable map in a few days time, you will see an update here. Its currently in : Munirka Enclave, Munirka Vihar (soon, in the next week) along with few areas of CP, Janpath, TY, Rohini Etc. The fibre deployment depends on the type of accommodation, for individual houses they are providing fibre to the house, in DDA flats and MDUs they provide MSAN… Read more »

Great detailed account of the deployment of fibre in parts of South Delhi as well as the fibre/broadband scheme across the different types of housing colonies. Were you able to procure the cable maps? It is good to learn that although MTNL does not want to provide full fibre to MDUs it is willing to provide it to an near near to the MDU and then roll out copper on VDSL2. One wishes BSNL too follows suit. Presently, many Area SDEs say that owing to the expensive nature of rolling out FTTH in a city they prefer to provide FTTH… Read more »

It would be great to learn what is in the offering with MTNL. That way one can convince BSNL to step up and start providing at least VDSL to the home rather than the present scenario where they raise their hands up the moment they learn that the potential customer is not residing in a Multi-storied apartment complex.
