The state-owned telecommunications company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched 4G services in various locations in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu on Friday. BSNL is gearing up for the launch of 4G services under the Phase IX.2 project in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts shortly. Reportedly, the company will install 2,114 4G towers under the Phase IX.2 project, with work currently in progress in the four districts.

BSNL 4G Launch in Tiruvallur district
"BSNL launched 4G mobile services in Thiruvallur District, Tamil Nadu, in the areas of Nochili, Kolathur, Pallipet, Thiruvellavoyal, Ponneri, Athipedu, Annamalaicheri, Thirupalaivanam, Elavembedu, Minjur, LNT Shipyard Kattupalli, Veeranathur, Srikalikapuram, Vanganoor, and RK Pet on July 5, 2024," BSNL Chennai said on X (formerly Twitter).
Funding and Cost
This significant step under the 4G Saturation project utilises technology developed under the 'Make in India' initiative. The project is funded by the Universal Service Obligation (USO) Fund of the Centre, with a project cost of Rs 16.25 crore, the statement said.
This milestone marks a significant step in the company's efforts to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens in rural and remote areas. According to media reports, the Chief General Manager of BSNL Chennai Telephones led the launch of 4G services in Tiruvallur district at a function.

Recent BSNL 4G Announcements
BSNL has recently announced the successful deployment of 10,000 4G sites across the nation as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. BSNL will also soon launch its 4G services across Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, and Kodagu districts in Karnataka. In May, BSNL launched 4G in the Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh, which will be extended across the state.
