BSNL Pips Bharti Airtel in Subscriber Addition During June 2018: Trai

BSNL has been reporting new subscriber additions every month and the same continued in June 2018. The state-run telecom operator, which operates in 20 telecom circles has added 2.44 lakh new customers during the month, according to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai). In the process, BSNL has added more subscribers than the current leading telecom operator Bharti Airtel which has added a mere 10,689 subscribers during June this year. The telecom subscriber base in India reached 116.8 crore at the end of June, with Reliance Jio adding the highest number of new customers to its mobile network, according to the latest Trai monthly subscription data report.


“The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1,153.51 million (115.35 crore) at the end of May 2018 to 1,168.89 million (116.88 crore) at the end of June 2018, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 1.33%,” Trai’s subscriber report for the month of June said.

The mobile subscriber base in the country increased to 114.65 crore with net addition of 1.55 crore in the reported month.

Reliance Jio led the growth in mobile segment by adding over 97 lakh new connections during the month. It was followed by Idea Cellular which added over 63 lakh new connections. Vodafone saw an addition of over 2.75 lakh new mobile connections, BSNL 2.44 lakh and Airtel 10,689.

Tata Teleservices, which is in process of merging mobile services business with Airtel, lost over 1 million mobile service customers. Reliance Communications lost 1.08 lakh mobile customers and state-run MTNL 9,615, as reported by PTI.

According to the report by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the landline segment continued to decline. “Wireline subscribers further declined from 22.51 million (2.25 crore) at the end of May 2018 to 22.40 million (2.24 crore) at the end of June 2018,” the report said.


The broadband subscribers increased to 44.71 crore in June from 43.2 crore in May with mobile segment accounting for around 96% of the total base.

“Top five service providers constituted 97.67% market share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of June 2018. These service providers were Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (215.26 million or 21.52 crore ), Bharti Airtel (95.31 million or 9.53 crore), Vodafone (62.86 million or 6.28 crore), Idea Cellular (42.95 million 4.29 crore) and BSNL (20.34 million 2.03 crore),” the report said.

The overall tele-density in India reached 89.72 in June. The urban tele-density reached 158.16 and rural tele-density increased marginally to 57.99 at the end of June.

Last one year behind Airtel for better coverage in our area where 300 houses and a college are located. Every time hear a lie, visit for survey but no action for improvement. If anyone from Airtel top management is listening I can share the entire mail thread of incompetence. Imagine this is happening even with corporate connections.

No matter how many additions BSNL has, it would do well to introspect how it has 100 million subscribers while being in operation for 2 decades and how JIO has 200 million subscribers after being in operation for 2 years

Simple Sir, Struggling to get a BSNL SIM . I have to take a day off and go to exchange meet unpleasant staff to get it activate. Jio team visit home or office on our convenience and deliver.

I thought this govt will change many things, now realized that whole bunch of ministers do not have any control over govt machinery or intention to set the things right than vote bank politics …..

Airtel is forcefully deactivating many sim card in some circle. I can see continous down-ward growth from last 5 month in maharshtra circel. One reason could be Telenor and docomo customer is being handle by same 2g/3g/4g network, which might over-burden it. So It was not suprise that Airtel added 10K only. Secondly Airtel want ot meet 50% in bihar after aquiring telenor and again 50% after docomo. thirdly, Airtel want to increser profit hence has to give quality service to POSTPAID, which will benifit prepaid also. So have great speed and lesser call-drop , its cleaning out dummy Subsciber… Read more »

Airtel now have Post paid and pre paid that close to Rs 200+ price bracket. Most of it is 3G 4G there is no option for those who want only voice. Wrong marketing decision for a country like India
