Amazon One Medical this week launched AI (Artificial Intelligence) tools to help doctors refocus on patient care. The company said it is utilising AI technology to significantly reduce the administrative burden on physicians. Studies indicate that family physicians spend over 17 hours a week on administrative tasks, equivalent to two full workdays, which leads to increased provider burnout and shortages, Amazon said.

Amazon One Medical’s AI Initiative
In response, Amazon One Medical has reportedly integrated AI tools into its custom electronic health record system, 1Life, aiming to cut administrative tasks by 40 percent. This initiative allows doctors to dedicate more time to patient care, the official release said.
"With the support of our AI tools, we've implemented into our custom electronic health record, I can sit down with a patient, make eye contact, and have an uninterrupted conversation—free from typing notes or reviewing lengthy records," said Andrew Diamond, MD, chief medical officer, Amazon One Medical.
"By reducing these distractions, Amazon One Medical clinicians can focus on why many of us became doctors in the first place—to develop caring and personal relationships with our patients to help them get and stay healthy."
Amazon said its technology teams work hand in hand with Amazon One Medical providers to develop effective, real-world AI solutions that simplify provider workflows while enhancing patient experiences. Below are some ways the company claims Amazon One Medical's AI technology, powered by AWS generative AI services including Amazon Bedrock and AWS HealthScribe, helps doctors save time:

Benefits for Physicians and Patients
Real-Time Visit Notes: Utilising AWS HealthScribe, physicians can capture detailed notes during patient visits, enhancing engagement and personal interaction. Instead of manually taking notes behind a computer, providers can be fully present and attentive when with patients, Amazon said.
Medical History Summarisation: AI efficiently reads and summarises extensive medical records, providing relevant information to inform personalised care plans.
Responsive Communication: An AI messaging tool enables care teams to promptly respond to patient inquiries with friendly and detailed notes that can be customised before sending, fostering better engagement.
Collaborative Care: AI assesses patient needs and care team skills to route tasks and workflows to the most suitable team member (whether an office administrator, doctor, care coordinator, or pharmacist), enhancing communication and coordination among care providers.

"Generative AI has the potential to revolutionise health care delivery, and we're just at the beginning stages," said Prakash Bulusu, chief technology officer, Amazon Health Services. "Our vision is to harness AI to empower primary care providers and enable them to deliver exceptional, human-centered care by easing the burden of time consuming administrative tasks. By intelligently applying AI to review health records, identify potential care gaps, route incoming messages, and help automate non-clinical workflows, primary care providers can focus on what matters most—fostering meaningful patient connections and delivering the best possible care."
Commitment to Patient Privacy
Amazon One Medical says it is committed to safeguarding patient privacy and adhering to the highest standards for protecting health information while building these innovations.
