Airtel Tanzania celebrated the launch of its 5G Network in conjunction with the inauguration of the Airtel 2Africa Marine Cable Centre. As the country's second-largest mobile operator in terms of subscriptions, Airtel marked the commercial launch of its 5G services on August 10, 2023. The occasion was marked by a grand event that included the unveiling of the Airtel 2Africa Marine Cable Centre in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which was graced by the presence of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

The Airtel 2Africa Marine Cable is both owned and operated by Airtel Tanzania. According to Airtel Tanzania Social updates, its 5G network offers speeds that are 20 times higher than the currently available speeds.
During the launch event held at the University Hall, Airtel showcased the capabilities of 5G, which encompassed Hologram, AR/VR, and other technologies based on high-speed internet. At the launch event it was highlighted that the presence of Airtel 2Africa will facilitate the delivery of internet services at affordable prices.

Airtel 5G in Tanzania
As per the Airtel Tanzania website, Airtel customers can access 5G through an Airtel 5G Router or a 5G-compatible smartphone. Airtel has noted that the Airtel 5G router is capable of connecting up to 64 devices while providing optimised connectivity with dual-band Wi-Fi.

For users of the Airtel 5G Router, Airtel offers Unlimited data plans starting at TZS 70,000, providing speeds of up to 10 Mbps, TZS 110,000 for speeds of up to 30 Mbps, TZS 150,000 for speeds of up to 50 Mbps, and TZS 200,000 for speeds of up to 100 Mbps. All 5G Unlimited prepaid data plans have a validity of 30 days.
Currently, Airtel 5G is accessible in specific locations, and Airtel Tanzania has plans to broaden its coverage in the near future. Presently, there are no dedicated 5G plans; all the existing 4G plans are compatible with 5G.
