Norwegian mobile operator Ice has activated its 5G Standalone (SA) Network, which the operator calls "Pure 5G," enabling it to offer advanced services on its mobile network. In a recent exercise, Ice conducted tests of the new technology for time-critical services, allowing the deployment of a private network slice for the Armed Forces, which will benefit from enhanced security.

Network Slicing for Time-Critical Services
The operator said 5G SA enables the creation of private network slices for specific users, such as the military, ensuring secure and prioritised communication. A primary contact at Ice working with the Armed Forces highlighted that the transition from traditional mobile networks to IP-based service delivery ensures faster and more efficient communication.
Mime Program Leverages 5G SA
One of the key advancements is network slicing, which enables secure, private network segments tailored to different users. Ice stated on Wednesday that the Mime program, which handles combat-related ICT for the military, will utilise this technology for secure, prioritised communication.

Ice 5G Standalone Network
Ice, owned by Lyse, has activated 5G SA across its core network, enabling dedicated communication slices for critical services, including ambulances and emergency services. Testing with fire and rescue services in Trondheim is also planned.
Mavenir provided the new mobile core network, Nokia delivered the radio network, and Ice uses Lyse's nationwide fiber network to enable secure communication nationwide.
