TRAI Recommends Tera Hertz Spectrum Use for R&D and Automotive Safety in India
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released its recommendations on the utilisation of the Tera Hertz (THz) spectrum. This comes in response to the Department of Telecommunications' (DoT) request for recommendations on the "Open and De-licensed use of Unused or Limited Used Spectrum Bands for Demand Generation for Limited Period in Tera Hertz Range" (95 GHz to 3 THz). Following a consultation process involving stakeholders and an Open House Discussion, TRAI has finalised key recommendations.

Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation (THEA)

A key proposal is the introduction of the "Tera Hertz Experimental Authorisation" (THEA), designed to promote Research & Development (R&D), technology trials, and experimentation in this spectrum. THEA will be available to a wide range of Indian entities, including academic institutions, R&D laboratories, and telecom providers. It also permits the marketing of experimental devices within this frequency range, with an initial authorisation period of five years, extendable for additional five-year terms, and a nominal fee of Rs 1,000.

Spectrum Bands for Assignment-Exempt Operations

In addition to THEA, TRAI has recommended that specific frequency bands—116-123 GHz, 174.8-182 GHz, 185-190 GHz, and 244-246 GHz—be opened for assignment-exempt operations. The 77-81 GHz band is also proposed for automotive radar systems, which could significantly enhance vehicle safety through technologies like collision warnings and blind spot detection.

Impact and Future Outlook

TRAI, in a statement on Wednesday, said these recommendations are expected to drive technological innovation, particularly in sectors requiring advanced wireless communications. The introduction of THEA will support India's "Make in India" initiative by encouraging domestic development of THz technologies.

Moreover, the availability of specific frequency bands for automotive radars is set to improve road safety, aligning with global standards in vehicular technology.
