Zayo Announces Major Network Infrastructure Upgrades Across North America
Communications infrastructure provider Zayo has announced major critical infrastructure upgrades across North America in its latest round. These upgrades include significant expansions of its network connectivity offerings, such as new 400G-enabled wavelength routes, expanded on-demand network capabilities, and IP core upgrades, Zayo said in an official announcement.

New 400G Wavelength Routes

"Today's businesses need to deliver connections and experiences faster than ever to remain competitive. In our digital business age, their network can be a make-or-break factor," said Zayo. "Zayo has built North America's largest independent fiber network, and we continue to advance our offerings to ensure our customers have a network that's ready for tomorrow's challenges," the company added.

Since April 2024, Zayo has completed five unique 400G wavelength routes, offering diversity across the US. Key routes include:

  • Los Angeles to San Jose: Provides low-latency, high-capacity data center connectivity.
  • Chicago to St. Louis: Enhances access to Chicago with a critical North-South link.
  • Reno to Barstow: Supports high-bandwidth needs for carriers and enterprises.
  • Columbus to Pittsburgh: Ensures faster access between major markets.
  • Quebec City to Montreal: Offers exclusive 400G connectivity options, connecting key data centers.

Zayo has also expanded 400G capacity on four routes connecting key cities including Richmond, Cleveland, and Chicago. Zayo currently provides the largest 400G network in North America.

With the completion of these routes, Zayo's North American fiber network is now nearly 90 percent 400G-enabled and is expected to be one of the largest fully 400G-enabled networks by the end of 2024, the company said.

Expansion of On-Demand Network Capabilities

Additionally, Zayo's Waves on Demand service allows for wavelength activation within 24 hours on 10 high-demand routes, including connections from Atlanta to Miami and Seattle to San Jose.

Zayo has also expanded its IP network, adding 11 new North American points-of-presence (PoPs) and upgrading four existing locations to enhance scalability and reliability for advanced applications. With these additions, Zayo now has 375 global IP PoPs, 250 of which are located in North America.

In 2024 alone, Zayo has expanded its network with nearly 500,000 additional fiber miles and 2,000 new on-net buildings. The company noted that these advancements aim to equip businesses with faster and more reliable connectivity, crucial for staying competitive.
