Intel to Produce Custom 5G SoC for Ericsson on 18A Process Tech

Intel and Ericsson have announced an expanded strategic collaboration towards revolutionizing 5G connectivity. The partnership aims to propel the development of next-generation optimized 5G infrastructure by leveraging Intel's cutting-edge 18A process technology and manufacturing capabilities, according to the official statement.

Custom 5G SoC Manufacturing

The strategic collaboration agreement, unveiled Tuesday, will see Intel manufacture custom 5G SoCs (system-on-chip) for Ericsson, empowering the latter to create highly differentiated products for future 5G infrastructure. With a shared vision to innovate and transform network connectivity, both companies said they are committed to delivering open, reliable, and future-ready networks.

Ericsson expressed enthusiasm for the extended collaboration, stating, "Ericsson has a long history of close collaboration with Intel, and we are pleased to expand this further as we utilize Intel to manufacture our future custom 5G SoCs on their 18A process node, which is in line with Ericsson's long-term strategy for a more resilient and sustainable supply chain."

Advancing 5G Connectivity Together

By leveraging Intel's advanced 18A process technology, which is a key milestone in Intel's five-nodes-in-four-years roadmap, Ericsson aims to achieve enhanced performance and deliver solutions in the 5G domain.

"After new gate-all-around transistor architecture known as RibbonFET and backside power delivery called PowerVia appear first in Intel 20A, Intel will deliver ribbon architecture innovation and increased performance along with continued metal linewidth reduction in 18A," the release stated.

Intel emphasized the collaboration's importance, remarking, "As our work together evolves, this is a significant milestone with Ericsson to partner broadly on their next-generation optimized 5G infrastructure."

Optimizing Intel Xeon Scalable Processors

The collaboration between Intel and Ericsson extends beyond the development of custom 5G SoCs. The companies are also set to expand their joint efforts to optimize 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with Intel vRAN Boost for Ericsson's Cloud RAN (radio access network) solutions. This move aims to enable communications service providers to enhance their network capacity, energy efficiency, flexibility, and scalability, paving the way for a more efficient and seamless 5G experience.

"In the fast-evolving landscape of 5G connectivity, the future lies in fully programmable, open software-defined networks powered by cloud-native technologies."
