Earlier this year, Ookla, the credible speed test service rated Bharti Airtel as India's fastest network. Today, Ookla released its average monthly mobile and broadband data speeds for the month of November 2017, and they are underwhelming. In November 2017, average mobile data download speed stood at 8.80 Mbps, and average upload speed stood at 3.54 Mbps.

With these data speeds, India secured a 109th place in the Ookla Speedtest Global Index. Ookla has listed a total of 123 countries, and amongst them, India stood at 109th place. Norway is first on the list with an average download speed of 62.66 Mbps, followed by Netherlands, Iceland, Singapore, and Malta. Top fives countries on the list have an average download speed of over 50 Mbps.

Even the average upload speed is underwhelming in the country. Talking about the fixed-line broadband speeds, India stands at 76th place in the list out of a total 133 countries. The average fixed-line download speed is 18.82 Mbps in November 2017, while the average upload speed is 13.59 Mbps.

Singapore is the leading country on the average broadband list with a speed of 153.85 Mbps, which is followed by Iceland with 147.51 Mbps speed. Like the average mobile data speed list, top 5 countries achieved over 100 Mbps speed. Having said that, a few Internet Service Providers (ISP) in India offer Gigabit speeds, and most of the top ISPs offer a maximum data speed of 150 Mbps.

The broadband speeds might get better in the future, but the mobile data speeds in the country are unacceptable. Reliance Jio which turned the tables of Indian telecom history isn't doing great either when it comes LTE speeds. An average speed of below 10 Mbps and a position of 109, when compared to other countries, tell the entire story.

Hopefully, the telecom operators and government take necessary steps to increase the mobile data speeds in the country.
