Xiaomi already confirmed that the Redmi 7 would get a discount of up to Rs 3,000 during the Amazon Great Indian Festival sale and Mi Diwali sale, but today, it announced that there would be additional Rs 1,000 off on the smartphone as well. This brings down the effective price of Redmi 7 to Rs 5,999, but should you purchase it over the newly launched Redmi 8A? Well, let's find out.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 at Rs 5,999: Is it a Good Buy?

Xiaomi launched the Redmi 7 and Redmi Y3 in India just a few months ago and both the phones featured similar design and hardware. The Redmi 7 comes as a successor to the Redmi 6 and it was a major upgrade over the latter. As for the specifications, the Redmi 7 features a 6.26-inch HD+ display with 19:9 aspect ratio and teardrop notch on top. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 technology.

Underneath, the Redmi 7 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 chipset built on 14nm manufacturing process and there's the Adreno 506 GPU handling the graphic-intensive tasks. The phone comes in two variants- 2GB+32GB and 3GB+32GB, and both of them features a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion up to 512GB. Cameras on the Redmi 7 include a 12MP primary shooter on the back which works in tandem with a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, we get an 8MP selfie camera. The phone is capable of recording videos in 1080p at 60fps, 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 30fps. There's a fingerprint scanner on the back and the phone has a beefy 4000mAh battery with 10W charging support.

At Rs 5,999, the Redmi 7 is a great buy, especially considering the Snapdragon 632 chipset underneath.

Should You Choose Redmi 8A Over Redmi 7?

Yesterday, Xiaomi launched the Redmi 8A as a successor to the Redmi 7A in India. The Redmi 8A features several firsts in the segment and it has some decent advantages over the Redmi 7 as well. Firstly, the Redmi 8A sports a 6.2-inch HD+ display with the same teardrop notch and 19:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, it has the Snapdragon 439 chipset, coupled with up to 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. There's a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion as well.

The Redmi 8A features a single 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor and an 8MP selfie camera. It has a USB Type-C port, 18W fast charging support and a 5000mAh battery underneath.

In some aspects like the battery, fast charging and the primary camera sensor, the Redmi 8A is ahead of the Redmi 7. However, the Redmi 7 features much-powerful Snapdragon 632 SoC and it can record videos of 1080p at 60fps, whereas the Redmi 8A is capable of shooting videos of 1080p at 30fps.

Also, the display on the Redmi 7 can get up to 450 nits bright, but Xiaomi did not reveal any such brightness levels for the Redmi 8A, sadly. The Redmi 7 also features a fingerprint scanner on the back and both the phones offer AI Face Unlock functionality.

Both the phones offer Dual 4G, VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and Wi-Fi Direct.

If you multitask a lot on your smartphone, then you can get the base variant of Redmi 7 with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage at Rs 5,999. However, if battery life is a priority for you, then choose the Redmi 8A over the Redmi 7.
