Xiaomi has increased the price of its entry-level yet disruptive smartphone, the Redmi 5A in the Indian market to Rs 5,999 as it promised at the launch event. The 2GB RAM and 16GB storage model will be available at its original price of Rs 5,999 going forward without any limited period discount. This news was posted on Redmi India's official Twitter handle without any further details. As usual, the Redmi 5A will be available on mi.com and Flipkart at the original price going forward.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A, also known as Desh Ka Smartphone was launched back in November 2017. It was the same month when Xiaomi India became the leading smartphone brand in India and to celebrate that, the company decided to offer the 2GB RAM variant of the Redmi 5A at Rs 4,999 for the first five million buyers. Just a month later, Xiaomi said that it sold over one million units of the Redmi 5A altogether. And it now seems like the company has reached its target of five million units sale, which could be the reason behind the price hike.

However, there's no confirmation on the same from Xiaomi India yet. So in the future, if you want to purchase the Redmi 5A's base variant, you've to shell out a Rs 1,000 extra and purchase the phone at Rs 5,999. The Redmi 5A is also available in a 3GB RAM and 32GB storage model at Rs 6,999 since the launch.

This price hike from Xiaomi comes at a time where the company is at the peak stage. Since mid-February, Xiaomi has been announcing new stuff every week, and this week, the Redmi 5 is all set to hit the Indian market. The Redmi 5 is expected to start at Rs 6,999 in the country for the base variant, and of course, for that price, it will be an excellent deal.

The Redmi 5A was the de-facto option for first-time smartphone buyers, but with Xiaomi increasing the price, the Tenor D now has an advantage because it is still available at Rs 4,999 on Amazon India.

As a quick recall, the Redmi 5A was introduced as a successor to the Redmi 4A, and it sports a 5-inch HD display on the front. Under the hood, it's powered by the Snapdragon 425 SoC, coupled with 2GB/3GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB of internal storage. The device rocks a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera. It launched with MIUI 9 out of the box and offers a 3000mAh battery inside.
