Xiaomi has lately speeded up its Android Oreo updates. In last few weeks, the Chinese OEM has updated the Xiaomi Mi 5, Xiaomi Mi 6, and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 to the latest iteration of Android. Now, we are seeing the rollout of Android Oreo-based Global Stable ROM for Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Xiaomi, which launched the Mi Mix 2 back in September 2017 has today started rolling out a stable version of MIUI 9.5 to the smartphone. The update brings Android Oreo features to the bezel-less smartphone. The new Mi Mix 2 update comes with the version number 9.5.2.0 ODECNFA. The update also includes the December 2017 security patch.

To install the update on your Mi Mix 2 smartphone, you have to be coming from the Global Beta 7.12.21, or you’ll get an error. Otherwise, you first need to flash the MIUI Global Beta 7.12.21 on the Mix 2, then wait for an OTA to appear to get the device updated to the MIUI 9.5. Xiaomi did not release fastboot and recovery ROMs of this update as of this writing.

After flashing the MIUI Global Beta 7.12.21, you will receive an OTA update. If you are yet to receive the OTA, you can choose to manually download and install same from the About phone section. Go to go to Settings > About phone > Update > Select update file and select the appropriate file. The MIUI 9.5 Stable ROM is available on the official MIUI Forum.

The update does not come with a changelog, but smartphone runs similar features as other Xiaomi devices that have been updated to Oreo. The highlights of the update are the Face Unlock feature and Screen Gesture controls. Recently, we reported that Xiaomi is rolling out Face Unlock feature to the Mix 2 and Mi 6 smartphone, and the same has been added to the Global ROM as well.

The Face Unlock feature bring facial recognition technology to the Mi Mix 2 using the front camera for security purposes. However, the feature isn’t as secure as that on the Apple iPhone X. And the gesture controls is something we have seen in earlier Xiaomi devices such as the Redmi 5 Plus and others. These gestures are similar to the ones present on the Apple iPhone X.

These features had earlier been available only on the China ROM, but now, they have been added to the Global ROM as well and that too in the Global Stable version. Apart from these, Android Oreo also brings improvements which help increase battery life and speed by limiting background activity. Other Oreo features like picture-in-picture mode, Autofill, and a bunch of new emojis are also now available.

The Mi Mix 2 was Xiaomi’s follow up to the original Mi Mix smartphone with a full-screen display with extremely small bezels. Launched in 2017, the device packs Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 8GB/6GB of RAM with up to 256GB of storage, a 12 MP rear camera, and a 3,400mAh battery. The phone shipped with Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box and with Oreo update, the phone still remains pretty good for 2018.
