Vodafone Idea Subscriber Loss Continues in May 2024: TRAI Data

Vodafone Idea (Vi) continues to lose customers. The struggling telecom operator, despite raising significant funds, has not been able to stop customers from leaving its network. The monthly performance report published by TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) shows that the telco lost 1.67 million active subscribers. Further, Vi's overall subscriber base also went down by 0.92 million users. After the quarterly results, we will get to know how many 4G customers were added by the telecom operator.




Apart from Vi, another telco to lose customers in May 2024 was the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). BSNL has been continuously losing customers to private telecom operators in the absence of 4G. According to TRAI data, BSNL's overall wireless subscriber base went down by 0.52 million users. As for the case of active users, BSNL lost 0.62 million users.

Let's take a look at the figures of Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.

Reliance Jio led by adding the most wireless subscribers during the month. Jio's overall subscriber base grew by 2.19 million users while Bharti Airtel's overall wireless subscriber base grew by 1.25 million users.

The active users added by Jio and Airtel during the month were 3.53 million and 0.84 million. The total subscriber base for the telcos at the end of May 31, 2024, was:

Jio - 474.62 million

Airtel - 384.16 million

Vodafone Idea - 218.16 million

BSNL - 86.49 million

BSNL and Vodafone Idea continue to lose subscribers. It will be interesting to see the effect of tariff hikes on the subscriber base of the respective telcos. All the private telecom operators increased the tariffs of their popular plans, and thus, some SIM consolidation is expected. As of now, Vi would want to add active users, that too 4G high paying users so that it can grow its user base with high ARPU customers to boost revenue levels.
