The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked the telcos to provide information or data on the spam calls that were made to Indian consumers in the April-June 2024 quarter. There are many unregistered telemarketers in the country who keep making robocalls to customers. While the regulatory body has earmarked the 140 numbering series for all promotional or marketing calls, there are still robocalls being made via 10-digit numbers. Now TRAI has asked the telcos to provide information on such calls that were made to the users during the quarter.

According to an ET report, the officials at TRAI are going to take strict actions against those who are making such calls. The regulatory body has sought details from the telecom operators, and at the same time, shared some numbers with the telcos against which they received complaints from consumers.
What happens is that these telemarketers take primary rate interface (PRI) services from the Indian telcos. With each PRI, users get 32 connections at one go. Taking 10 PRIs results in getting about 320 numbers. Then these numbers are put on a robotic dialler which keeps making calls to customers. Even when the customers block one number, the other number from the same PRI makes the call again. This ruins the mobile network experience for the consumers.

It also puts them at risk of falling for a scam. Individual users can only take up to nine numbers in their name. However, the corporates have no such limits. They can take 1000 numbers if they want. TRAI and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) want to curb the spam calls being made in India and this is why they are going to take strict actions against those who are invovled in such acitivities.
