Opera Software has developed a new offering branded as Opera web pass which aims at breaking free from the concept of having to subscribe to fixed data packs from your mobile operator. Usually a subscriber has only two options for using mobile data (2G or 3G) on his cell phone, either he pays at the base tariff of 2p/10KB or he subscribes to monthly fixed data packs offered by his operator.
The problem with this is that if a subscriber only wishes to use youtube for streaming videos for one hour, he still has to subscribe to a minimum data pack of one day validity which is often higher priced.
With Opera web pass a subscriber has way more flexibility, he has the option of buying packs either based on time (1 hour, 1 day, 1 week) or content-based (Youtube, facebook, twitter etc). The web pass for the participating operators can conveniently be purchased or redeemed through opera mini browser. At the moment, only Vodafone and Idea are providing this feature and FreeCharge is giving out the web passes for free as a promotion for its website. Vodafone users with opera mini browser installed on their smartphone are entitled to 5MB and Idea users are entitled to 10MB free data usage per day.
