NTT Docomo to Launch Fastest 5G SA Service in Japan This August
NTT Docomo announced it will commercialise the deployment of New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) technology, which the company claims offers Japan's fastest download speeds of up to 6.6 Gbps on its 5G SA Network. Docomo will commence offering the technology on August 1, 2024, in select zones within Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture, with plans for gradual expansion, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

NR-DC Technology

NR-DC integrates three bands: Sub-6 (3.7 GHz and 4.5 GHz) and millimeter-wave (28 GHz) frequency bands, allowing simultaneous transmission across multiple frequencies by connecting two 5G base stations. Initially introduced in December 2021, Docomo's 5G Standalone (SA) services began combining one Sub-6 frequency with the millimeter-wave band in August 2022, achieving download speeds of 4.9 Gbps.

Integration of Multiple Frequency Bands

The latest development further enhances these speeds by combining both Sub-6 frequencies with the millimeter-wave band, the Japanese telco said. Standalone (SA) mode is an optional 5G service for certain smartphones and other mobile devices under a 5G service contract, the company added.

According to Docomo, supported devices include Xperia 1 VI SO-51E, Galaxy S24 Ultra SC-52E, and Galaxy Z Fold 6 SC-55E.

These advancements require a 5G SA subscription, a compatible device, and a SIM card. Docomo plans to expand its range of millimeter-wave band-compatible devices and extend service coverage, aiming to improve customer convenience.
