MTS had not participated in the recent auction and has not spent additionally on acquiring new spectrum, it remains unclear as to why it has decided to hike its data tariffs. Nearly 50% of MTS’s total revenue is generated from its data offerings.

It remains to be seen how this move will work for MTS when the 3G operators reduce the price of 3G data and competition increases. MTS has declared that they will be looking forward to spectrum sharing and trading guidelines to decide their further course of growth in India.

It is clear that MTS India is going to leave the Indian Telecom sector soon. 4G is gripping the country as cheap handsets are round the corner, Jio’s public paid wifi is a big threat to incumbents in Metro Circles, NOFN project will enable broadband companies like Hathway, ACT to provide FTTH connectivity in every part of the country. Non participation in this auction also cost the company dearer as no more 800 MHz spectrum available.
