Earlier, we had reported that Micromax has partnered with Cyanogen to release Cyanogen OS powered smartphones and Micromax Canvas 5 was tipped to be the first such device. However, in a surprising move, Micromax has announced a completely new brand; Yu. Devices under this brand will be powered by Cyanogen OS, and will be sold online exclusively.

CyanogenMod For Micromax Smartphones

YU will be a game changer brand in India. Disruption has to be the name of the game and with this partnership, we are raising the bar again and rewriting the rules. As YU is envisioned to build an ecosystem of connected devices and offer a differentiated user experience, we will engage directly with consumers. We strongly feel that CYANOGEN is the right partner to help us deliver a differentiated experience in the mobile ecosystem, we are together committed to challenge the limits of possibility and create a new world.

- Rahul Sharma, Co-Founder of Micromax

Cyanogen OS, already comes pre-installed with Oppo N1, Oppo N3, and OnePlus One. Cyanogen OS is quite famous for its stock Android UI like design, fast performance, and plethora of options without bloating the software.

We’re excited about this partnership as we share a common vision around a powerful user-focused mobile experience. It’s only the beginning as the partnership unfolds. Micromax + Cyanogen = revolution. Stay tuned for many awesome new innovations that will arise from this collaboration.

- Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen, Inc.

It isn't clear whether these devices will be sold through Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, or their own portal, but it will be very interesting to see how it affects its offline sales and Micromax branded devices. Will you buy smartphones and tablets with Yu branding?
