Last month, we were probably the first ones in India to report that Micromax will release CyanogenMod-based smartphones. According to a latest reports, the Micromax Canvas 5 would be the first such device and is expected to cost below Rs. 22,000.
The yet unannounced smartphone from Micromax might feature a 5-inch Full HD display, an octa-core MediaTek MT67XX processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot. It might sport an 18-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera.
If this device gains momentum, Google’s Android One might have some problems as CyanogenMod based devices offer more features than Google's stock Android without making any negative impact on the performance of the device.
Cyanogen has become a centre of attraction for various leading companies for a partnership or acquisition. Many technology giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung and Yahoo are the ones that are considering the smartphone software startup Cyanogen as an ‘ideal partner’ or ‘worthy acquisition’.
Meanwhile, Micromax also launched the Canvas 4 Plus last month, with a 5-inch HD screen, a 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6592 octa-core CPU, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 2000mAh battery, all that at a price tag of Rs. 16,750.
