The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently published the performance data of telcos for June 2024. According to the data, the trend of Airtel and Jio adding users while BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) and Vodafone Idea (Vi) losing customers continued. Let's take a look at the figures.
Reliance Jio added 1.91 million wireless users while Airtel added 1.25 million active users. State-owned BSNL lost 0.75 million and Vodafone Idea lost 0.86 million users.

Jio's total user base as per TRAI at the end of June 30, 2024 was 476.53 million. Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL had a total of 389.02 million, 217.30 million, and 85.77 million customers. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) had 1.91 million total users out of which only 0.42 million users were active.
Note that here we are talking about the wireless users. Let's now shift our focus to VLR or active user base of these telecom operators.

Bharti Airtel's 98.92% (384.83 milliion) of wireless customers were active. Jio's 92.53% of the user base was active, with over 440.94 million active users. For Vodafone Idea, 86.64% of its user base was active with over 188.26 million users. BSNL'ss 54.31% of the user base was active wiith 46.58 million users.
Even in the wireline business, Jio was the leader as it added 0.43 million users. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea added 0.04 ad 0.02 million users. BSNL lost 0.06 million users here. It will be interesting to the see the data for the month of July 2024, when tariff hikes were implemented.
In the overall market (wired + wireless), Jio had 51.97% of the pie, Bharti Airtel had 29.91% of the pie, while Vodafone Idea and BSNL had a meagre 13.59% and 2.66%. One thing that's observable here is that Vodafone Idea has been adding wireline customers at a regular basis which is a good sign.
