In the recent past, a release from the Ministry of Communications said that cybercriminals have been committing crimes by making international spoof calls displaying Indian numbers starting from +91. The person to whom this call is made believes that this is an Indian number, but in reality, the calls are made internationally and the numbers are manipulated by the fraudsters.
These spam calls have resulted in people losing their hard-earned money as it is easy for these imposters to scam the citizens by posing as government officials or banking personnel. To safeguard Indian consumers from such spam or malicious calls, the Indian government has launched the International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System. As the system went live, within 24 hours, about 1.35 crore or 90% of all the incoming international calls with Indian phone numbers were identified as spoofed calls and blocked by the TSPs (telecom service providers) so that the calls couldn't reach the consumers. Bharti Airtel and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) have also announced anti-spam technologies for their mobile networks and Airtel's network has already started identifying spam calls in real time and alerting customers.
