Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the struggling state-run telecom operator, could soon deploy 22,000 new 4G site across India. Where these sites will exactly come up, we don’t know. However, we do know that these sites have been under consideration for some time. The government is working out the specifications, and then a fresh order for 22,000 will be given to the TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) led consortium. This consortium includes Tejas Networks and Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).

Jyotiraditya Scindia, in a conversation with ET said, “We have got 1 lakh (4G) sites that are live. We are now processing the final specs for the new 22,000-site order. But we are also thinking that we need to go beyond that, and for that we need fund flow for which I have met with the finance minister.”
Around 98,000 4G sites from BSNL are commissioned and are live across India. The new 22,000 sites will add into the coverage and speed experience for the consumers. BSNL also recently announced the launch of VoWi-Fi services for consumers across the country. VoWi-Fi stands for voice-over Wi-Fi, and is a service which enhances the voice calling experience for consumers when they are connected to a Wi-Fi.

Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio, the three private telecom operators of India are already offering VoWi-Fi service for years. BSNL needs to desperately move fast with 4G in order to compete with the private telcos. Otherwise, all the money invested in BSNL would go to sheer waste and what’s sad is that it would be yours and mine money which will go to waste (as government is funding BSNL through taxes we pay). Yes, in the relief package a lot of asset monetisation has also been focused on, but it is still not at the level in which it can take care of BSNL’s expenses.
