Airtel says completes acquistion of Videocon spectrum in six circles

Airtel, the country’s leading telco, said that it has completed the acquisition of Videocon’s spectrum in six circles for Rs 4428 crore. Both the companies, in a joint statement, said that all necessary approvals including the conditions stated in the spectrum trading guidelines have been met with.

Before the Airtel deal, Idea Cellular, which is India’s third largest telco, was in touch with Videocon for a similar deal. However, Idea had terminated its spectrum trading agreement with Videocon Telecom for the latter’s Gujarat and UP West circles, signed for Rs 3310 crore.

Airtel and Videocon two had entered into a deal to trade airwaves in the 1800 Mhz band across six circles of Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, UP (East) and UP (West) for Rs 4,428 crore. Airtel acquired 2X5 Mhz of airwaves in the 1800 Mhz band.

Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel has been on a drive to acquire 4G spectrum. After buying Qualcomm’s airwaves in four circles, Airtel purchased Augere Wireless, which owned 4G airwaves in the Chhattisgarh-Madhya Pradesh circle. Both the deals netted Airtel airwaves in the 2300 MHz band and raised its holdings in that particular band to nine, including four of its own.

Finally Airtel 4g will launch in Gujarat. The way Vodafone’s network has detoriated I really think Airtel has the best chance to grab west zone. I also think they will match jio’s tariff so going with Airtel makes more sense now. I will port to Airtel from Vodafone once they launch 4G in Ahmedabad.

Seriously, Vodafone has deteriorated a lot here. It has now become impossible to hear the other person in areas like the Ringroad stretch from Vaishnodevi to Chandkheda and many other similar areas. Not even the network, even the customer care has also deteriorated here.

However, I still feel that AirTel will not be able to make it due to their 1800Mhz spectrum here. Signals in buildings and undergrounds suffer a lot. But am sure, they will launch their 4G very soon.

True.. Airtel is on 1800 mhz but currently Vodafone is not providing good services even in 900mhz.. Call drops, bad voice quality and many more issues with Vodafone. So it should not matter now.. After 4G i believe Airtel will have an upper hand here.

Same is the case here in Kolkata. Earlier I was with Vodafone. But even using basic voice was trouble. Innumerable call drops. Poor voice all over the city. 3G speeds were similar to 2G speeds. Shifted to airtel and haven’t faced a single call drop till now. 4G is good. Inbuilding coverage is patchy. It’s ok considering they are using 2300 Mhz band. 3G voice is super clear. And 3G speeds are more consistent at around the 3 mbps mark. What more do I need? In the future they will use 1800 Mhz band for 4G as well. And 1800… Read more »
