Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has become the first mobile operator in UK to launch a Total Not Spot (TNS) site as part of the second phase of the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme. The new site, located on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, brings 4G mobile coverage to previously underserved areas, including the villages of Balivanich, Grimsay, and Liniclate, as well as nearly all of Benbecula.

Connectivity for Local Communities and Tourists
It will also improve connectivity along the 30km stretch of the A365, benefiting both local residents and tourists. The site will support all mobile networks, ensuring coverage for around 200,000 annual visitors to the region, including major attractions like the Ushenish Lighthouse and the Hebridean Way. Additionally, the site is also crucial for seafarers operating in the nearby Little Minch waters, the operator said.
Site Delivered in Six Weeks
The operator worked with build partner WHP Telecoms to deliver the site in six weeks, overcoming significant challenges such as bad weather.
says the first TNS sites comes just months after it delivered more partial not spot sites than any other operator to complete the first phase of the SRN programme.

"This new site in South Uist, which will bring mobile signal to local residents, major roads and visitor attractions which were previously disconnected, illustrates how the total not spot programme can transform lives when we invest in the right locations," said the Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2.
