Finnish telecommunications company Elisa will deploy Nokia's Lightspan MF solution to enhance its existing fiber network and deliver new ultra-broadband services to customers across Finland. With this deployment, Elisa will become the first European operator to trial 25G, 50G, and 100G PON services, demonstrating speeds up to 10 times faster than current networks, the companies said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Trial of 25G, 50G, and 100G PON Services
The trial demonstrates how different PON technologies, such as 10G, 25G, 50G, and 100G, can coexist on the same fiber network, evolving Elisa's broadband offerings while ensuring future scalability, Elisa said.
The deployment uses Nokia's Lightspan platform, which is designed to deliver up to 10 times faster speeds than most existing networks. Additionally, Elisa has deployed Nokia's Altiplano platform to support 10G XGS-PON, automating and enhancing network management and reliability.

Network with Multiple PON Technologies
This technology will enable Elisa to meet future bandwidth demands driven by AI, with Bell Labs forecasting that total AI traffic will reach 91 EB per month by 2030 in Western Europe alone, as noted by Nokia.
Commenting on the deployment, Elisa said, "We're excited to be the first in Europe to show up to 100G PON speeds in a live fiber network trial and demonstrate the world-class capabilities we can deliver to support the next generation of broadband services."

100Gbps in Commercial Network
With this, Elisa will reportedly become the first European operator to demonstrate up to 100 Gbps broadband speeds over a live commercial network, and Nokia claims to be the only vendor supporting all PON technology options.
