Ericsson Expands Global 5G Equipment Manufacturing to Malaysia

Ericsson has announced the inauguration of its first 5G manufacturing facility in Southeast Asia. Ericsson announced on Friday that the facility, based in Penang, Malaysia, will produce state-of-the-art Ericsson 5G radio equipment, including the industry-leading lightweight and energy-efficient Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios.

Ericsson's 5G Manufacturing Hub

Ericsson has chosen Malaysia as one of its 11 primary manufacturing sites worldwide to produce advanced 5G products that will support both global and local 5G rollouts. Ericsson has been in Malaysia since 1965 and has been leading the way in the implementation of the 5G network for the country.

Socioeconomic Contribution to Malaysia's Digital Ambitions

Ericsson is currently powering 147 live networks across 63 countries, including Malaysia. Ericsson has explained that manufacturing global 5G radio equipment in Malaysia is a significant socioeconomic contribution to the country.

"In Malaysia, the production of 5G radio equipment includes Ericsson's highly efficient Massive MIMO antenna-integrated radios, which are lightweight and energy-efficient. This equipment is manufactured in Prai, located in Penang, in partnership with Flex, a global manufacturer operating in 30 countries," Ericsson said.

Skill Transfer and Local Job Creation

According to Ericsson, the Penang facility is expected to generate employment opportunities and facilitate the transfer of technical knowledge to the local workforce, particularly in areas such as manufacturing, product engineering, and equipment testing.

Ericsson's Contributions to Malaysia's Digital Landscape

In addition to the new manufacturing facility, Ericsson said its contributions to Malaysia's digital landscape include hosting a Global Maintenance Center in Bukit Jelutong, one of the world's largest, and a Regional Distribution Centre at KLIA's Free Trade Zone.

Moreover, Malaysia serves as a base for a Regional Competence Hub, nurturing 5G expertise and regional support functions while promoting local talent on a global scale.
