Xiaomi launched its latest Android One phone globally, followed by launch for the Indian market. The Xiaomi Mi A2 debuted as the Mi A1 successor, a phone which would bring the stock Android experience for the users along with a 5.99-inch screen, 20MP front camera and a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC. The phone also comes with Quick Charge 4.0+ and starts retailing with a price tag of Rs 16,999. Around this price, another phone by Xiaomi has made some headlines in the last few months, which is the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. While the Mi A2 is priced higher than the Redmi Note 5 Pro that sells for Rs 14,999, there are a lot of things which compare well in these two phones. Let’s take a more in-depth look and decide which seems to be a more excellent choice for the mid-range buyer.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 comes with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) display sporting an 18:9 aspect ratio with a pixel density measuring 403 PPI. For protection, the phone features a 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 5. The processing prowess on the phone is derived from the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC in which four cores clock a frequency of 2.2GHz and other four cores clock 1.8GHz. Depending on the variants, the phone comes with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. On the software front, the phone comes with Android 8.1 Oreo with Android One certification which is the most notable plus point in this phone.

On the other hand, the Redmi Note 5 Pro also sports a very similar 5.99-inch Full HD+ (1080x2160 pixels) display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. This phone also comes with 2.5D curved glass which makes it identical to the Mi A2 in terms of screen. For performance, the device packs Octa-core Snapdragon 636 SoC which comes paired with Adreno 509 GPU and up to 6GB of RAM. This handset also runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5.

The Mi A2 has positioned itself in India as a camera-centric smartphone and touts of some impressive snapping capacity thanks to the dual rear setup involving 12MP Sony IMX486 sensor in the primary camera, featuring 1.25-micron pixels with an f/1.75 aperture and a 20MP IMX376 secondary sensor with 2-micron pixels, 4-in-1 Super Pixel tech, and an f/1.75 aperture with a flash accompanying this setup. For selfies, the Mi A2 comes with the same 20MP sensor on the front which also comes paired with a soft-light flash module.

Meanwhile, the Redmi Note 5 Pro features a 12MP primary sensor with a f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP secondary sensor that has a f/2.0 aperture. There is a 20MP sensor on the front which comes with selfie flash as well.

Connectivity options on the Mi A2 include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac (dual-band, 2.4GHz and 5GHz), Bluetooth v5.0, GPS/ A-GPS, and a USB Type-C (v2.0) port. The Mi A2 also ditches on the 3.5mm headphone jack. Sensors include an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, digital compass, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. The battery on the device is a 3000mAh one which comes with Quick Charge 4.0+ technology. The dimensions of the phone measure 158.7x75.4x7.3mm, and it weighs 168 grams. The phone is available in 64GB and 128GB storage options along with Black, Gold, Lake Blue, and Rose Gold colour options.

The connectivity options on the Redmi Note 5 Pro include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device comes with a powerful 4000mAh battery with dimensions of the phone being 158.6x75.4x8.05mm. There is a 64GB internal storage variant which comes with hybrid SIM slot for expansion via microSD card.

The Xiaomi Mi A2 debuted with a price tag of Rs. 16,999 for the 4GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage variant. Although the 6GB RAM/ 128GB variant was also announced, its release date remains a mystery for now. The pre-orders started on August 9, and the phone will be live for selling on August 16 across Amazon India, Mi.com, Mi Home, and Mi Preferred Partner Stores. Some launch offers on this phone include 4.5TB additional data from Reliance Jio and Rs. 2,200 instant cashback.

The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, retails for Rs. 14,999 for the 4GB RAM, 64GB storage variant and Rs. 16,999 for the 6GB RAM, 64GB storage variant. This phone is available on Flipkart, Mi Home, and Mi.com through a flash sale model, although the company has also initiated the open sales for the phone as well.
